Rust starting under fender lip

Recommended Posts

I live in the Midwest so I go through rough winters. I try to wash the truck off as soon as it gets road salt on it. I noticed it was starting to get rust under the fender lip the other day. What is the easiest way to get it under control?

Unfortunatley your seeing the rust that is visible what would bother me is whats lurking between the bed sides not sure if you bought the truck new but perhaps the previous owner wasn't as particular at washing the road salt off as you are I would maybe think about trading it or looking into fender flares or getting it repaired and using an undercoat that will keep the metal sealed

What year is your truck?  When you wash the truck, make sure you are blasting water up under the truck in between the outer body panel and inner panel of the beds sheet metal.  I take the power washer gun and shoot up behind the rear wheels towards the outside body panel.  The rust is growing from inside out.

in the spring I get on a mechanics creeper and hose the underside and inner body panels thoroughly

If it took 10 years to see rust on a Midwest truck, you did pretty good imo. I’m in the northeast where we have the same rust problems with the way they salt around here.
Check online. I think rustoleum makes a product that supposedly stops rust in its tracks. I remember my brother in law using it in the bed of his Ford. He was happy with the results.

If anyone can provide the link I’d appreciate it.

If you can clean that area up good, you could probably apply something like this as your rust appears to be minimal at this point and just getting started.. The color of the product is black, but your rust is under the lip and not visible so you may not have to repaint the white. It's all about the prep and hitting ALL the rust. Search online for other similar products and read the reviews.

Got to get between those panels (the pinch weld) and no paint is going to do that...it will need something like Krown or Fluid Film to stop it and prevent it from getting worse.

Paint only helps what you can see and physically get at...

Okay. I washed the truck all up and sanded down the rust that was showing and applied fluid film. What should my next step be?
