Method Race Wheels - Rusting < 6 months

Recommended Posts

Yeah, stainless comes in a lot of flavors. Pretty much anything in the 400 series will rust much faster than something in the 300 series.

I couldn’t agree more, I have a SW exhaust system which is 304 Stainless. Expensive yes, but the system looks brand new still and is over a year old. My previous truck had a Banks system and by 1 year, there was plenty of surface rust.

Even still, you’d think Method wouldn’t want them corroding at all, much less in such a short time, salt or not.

That’s my biggest gripe. I expected rust at some point around 1.5 maybe 2 years old. Not at 4 months.

The Fuel Trophy’s i had on my f150 were in pristine condition after a couple of winters. I think a lot has to do with all the removable hardware on the Method wheels versus the fuel wheels where the rim bolts are milled into the wheels.

Still no word back from Discount tire. Going to ring them this afternoon.

This type of corrosion happens on boat out drives which is why there are sacrificial anodes. Dissimilar metals tend to react with each other causing corrosion.

Method wheels are aluminum alloy and the bolts are stainless steel (definitely not 304) Throw some salt/slush at the wheel in the winter as a catalyst and you have yourself some galvanic corrosion... this explains why Method wheels look good in Cali (no road salt) and look like hell in Midwest.

Not anything new - these are known to corrode.  More so the nickel plated bolts on the faux rings, they sell replacements at $1 a bolt.  You can't get replacements off the shelf anywhere, they are super short and 'proprietary.'  I wish someone provided an aluminum direct replacement.  Still love my methods though!

I needed new hardware on my Method 301 bead locks and they actually sent me a set free...but those are much more pricey wheels and geared towards a specific target audience.  Run of the mill street locks, they would go broke replacing them all.

Pm me I have a bag of bolts you can have for shipping if you want them. 80+ of the bolts I think.

This is why I went with painted fuel wheels with a center cover. On my last Truck I had chrome plated wheels and with in 24 hrs. of the first snow the chrome was pitted. Never again, hopefully the painted fuel wheels hold up.

Yup I’m going with fuel trophy’s in gray. Had them on my ford and love the style.

Well this is not good news, I have the zinc bolts and they are solid rust covered. I put them on in the Summer last year and looked perfect. Noticed one a month ago that was rusty and now the majority are. Was going to bite the bullet and get stainless ones from Method for dollar a bolt but not if those corrode too...

You can replace them with a real stainless bolt. I found a guy on a jeep forum that replaced his bolts. The thread is M8 x 1.25 in 8mm length.  https://www.mcmaster.com/#91287a147/=1bbvke0 25 bolts for $9. Might need a washer to go with them since they are a little longer then the ones that come with methods. I was going to do this with mine but I have since changed my mind and will paint them instead. I dont have issues with them rusting but cant stand the zinc yellow on the black rims...

I got a set of these on the way, going to try to use without spacers but sure I can fine some if too long. The Jeep thread I found guy had button heads and used spacers because it looked better. He seemed to suggest just the 10mm length bolt worked though. We shall see.
