4.3 V6 gone in 2019?

Yes, but not unusual for threads to take on a life of their own!  I looked forward to and appreciate your informed responses  - on or off topic ;-)    Mentioning 6 cylinder engines and/or manual transmissions usually generates all kinds of comments on this forum!

As my youngest brother would say to me, "Love ya like a brother. Just not one of mine. " It's all good; although I do feel a bit foolish. Not a feeling that is a stranger to me.

Back in the day we just assumed 1.67 cubic feet of air per hp. A pound and a tenth of torque per cubic inch. .45 BSFC. 60 FPS piston speed for road motors and thermal efficiency around 25%. You asked  how much and how fast. Grab a napkin and you Sharpie and in a few minutes Bingo! A motor size was selected. Carb selected and jetting in hand and be 90% home on the first hit.

Then some crazy stuff started to happen regarding thermal efficiency and all bets are now off. Benz has race motors up to 50% TE now. Insane number. Mazda is about to break some heads with HCCI ALL MOTOR technology and I seriously don't see V-8's in over 5 liters surviving it at all for very long even running on one cylinder skip fire with Electric torque boost. Desperate moves by desperate people.

VVT/VVL/DGI and some impressive headway in cylinder head and inlet box designs have made even 50 fps piston speed obsolete. Once those barriers were removed material proportion, selection and finish that would have been prohibitive for engine reliability and longevity are not only cost effective but common in use. Factory motors with race grade parts in a Mazda 2. Call it BMW's tenacity or call it vision to continue to develop the inline 6. The market will come to those who did not follow the Lemmings off the cliff of 'marketing focus group' lunacy. They will be light years ahead and GM fans left holding there dreams like a puff of smoke.

Where is our beloved 396/401/427/454 BBS platform today? The same place our 5 liter V-8's will be tomorrow I opine.

It has been very hard for many truck enthusiasts (as evidenced in this thread) to get over the V8 bravado.  Maybe not the best word but I agree and truly believe GM is trying desperately to appease this significant portion of the truck buying public.  Their love for the V8 stems from experiences of yesteryear, much like my love for 6cyl/4spds.  Despite arguments that modern engines with fewer cylinders far exceed the power of past V8's and do it far more efficiently, many cling to earlier truths.  It is the same transition that came with manual transmissions.  There was a time in my formative years where the stump pulling, macho trucks came with a 4spd floor shifter.    It will be in our life time that V8 architecture will be gone.  It has pretty much left the car scene and another major North American truck manufacturer.  I was surprised and disappointed that GM has held on but in their defense I believe DFM will serve as a placebo to help wean us off the perceived need for 8 cylinders.  For me this was similar to when truck producers switched to a car like manual 5 spd and then focused on automatic transmissions.  Instead of the truck working for you, you were working for the truck.  No point in shifting gears when your truck can do it better automatically.  In a couple of years V8 enthusiasts will be saying no point in dragging around extra cylinders!  :-)

I have no issue with the V6 being a option or even standard in a pickup. I am one loves power and the V8 sound. ( And no.. Fords idea of playing a v8 soundtrack is simply ridiculous! GM don't even think about doing that.)

However I'm sure this statement will ruffle a few feathers but why oh why are we as people or companies even considering bending over for a bunch of morons in the EPA and govt.?? I don't and will not follow any law that is a half- baked or totally moronic.

I've been a  a self employed contractor since 1998 but when I had bosses to answer to I would tell them if a idea was dumb. I never got canned for it and I kept my self respect.

This whole pollution bull is being addressed totally incorrectly by people who won't give up polluting things in their life. Yet they tell us our trucks need to operate on moss and pond scum because we are responsible for climate change!! WTF??

Yes I get mad when thinking of this. We've only been on this Earth recording data for a short time comparatively. The weather, the climates, etc. Go through cyclical changes on their own.

Sure I don't think we should needlessly pollute and I do many things to lessen my pollution.

I keep my house no warmer than 65, I recycle, I don't litter, etc. etc.

The govt. doesn't need to force a vehicle with lower and lower reliability ( ie: afm, and emissions garbage that doesn't work like they want)

If someone wants a then v6 then great, have a v6 for many of it's advantages and attributes.

I prefer " rip your face off" acceleration and performance over a marginal fuel economy improvement. ( I tow and haul a lot) so keep my V8 without all the garbage a option and tell the tree- huggers and the confused politicians to take a long walk off a short peer.

Consider my feathers ruffled, but you write and defend your position well.  It is incredible how our environments can influence personal beliefs.  Your views on "pollution bull" will probably be supported in your circle whereas I'd receive quite the outrage from mine if I shared you views! :-)

Pollution yes, and it’s better now mostly. Global warming or climate change influenced by humans, funny.

Glaciers did it...just look back 100k years ago.

Didn't EPA just announce a backing off of emissions requirements for auto makers? That should keep pushrod engines alive a bit longer...

I respect your opinion Donstar and your well intended response. Nice that we can all play nice yet disagree. [emoji106]

And this gentlemen is where I leave the room. I'll spar math and physics till pigs fly. You can't really loose when both of those topics are within God's domain and literally of his creation. Except by considerable consequence in ignoring them or misunderstanding them. Truth is if we all understood the rules perfectly there isn't any basis for disagreement. We each want to be right instead of accepting what he teaches us is right, thus we disagree. Still this pretty much sums up mans attempts at self governance. Consider the first time Adam and Eve were given a vote,. They got it wrong. Go figure. Humans have been repeating that same conclusion for over six thousand years. Likely have said to much already, so I'll leave ya to it. :seeya: Let me know when a man's government solves death.

Wow did this thread take a left turn. So let's see, were we talking about V6's being gone in 2019 or whether or not to eat the apple?

I'd prefer an orange actually lol! I dunno V6 guys are few and far in between and just have a very different train of thought I think when it comes to truck buying... Me personally the only reason I don't have a 6.2 is I don't have the $$ for it yet... I got fullsize truck so I could have way more capability than I need... If i had mo' money I'd have a 2500 HD with a Duramax, why? Why not couldn't hurt and maybe someday I'll appreciate the capability... Just like my tool collection: I have tons of tools that I use very infrequently but, I'm prepared for as much as possible... My view on trucks is the bigger the better, the more powerful the better if for no other reason than I like having the most capability possible even if I don't need it often or maybe ever, I'm glad it's there... I also carry a gun daily for the same reason, probably won't ever need it but, I'm glad I've got it in case the need arises..

I'm with you on almost all counts! Even the concealed carry!! Although I probably wouldn't go with a 2500; I don't even need a 1/2 ton truck. A 2500 won't fit in my garage like the short bed does LOL!!

Best to ya,

John

And....point perfected. We are anything if but predictable.

So taking a right turn I believe the absence of a six cylinder GM gas engine in 2019 has not been confirmed.

It's why rumors are so dangerous. Their whisper breaths life into a thing not yet born or perhaps, even  conceived.
