I just watched the youtube video about the new Silverados.

I was surprised by the number of commenters who stated that they would not buy it because it still had a column shifter instead of a shifter in the console.

I don't get that.  Think of how much space you loose in the console by putting a shifter there.  It is a truck, I kind of like still having the shifter on the column.  Maybe those idiots would prefer a rotary knob like Range Rover uses...

I like the column shifter.  I have maually shifted our '12 1500 ever since I read comments about the shift patterns in that transmission, going up or down.  With the column shifter I can get back to the steering wheel quickly, a safety feature.  I'm looking to get a '18 2500HD Midnight Edition w/ Duramax, or the '18 Sierra 2500HD All Terrain X w/ Duramax.  I'm SURE I'll be manually shifting that also. ?

Facts are more than likely this particular 3.0 L diesel engine is an import from someplace in Southeast Asia! With that said it didn't have to be, GM could've been 1st of the big 3 to adapt a diesel engine to their light truck line in 2008, and have it not only be something special but manufactured in the United States.

The new 3.0L Duramax was designed in the states and will be built exclusively in Flint, MI:

There is one thing about the new crew cab trucks that has me bugged a bit.  Not bad, but still makes me think.  These wheel bases are 4 inches longer.  That HUGH!  I'm sure the ride quality will be much better.  But the maneuverability is most definitely going to suffer.  Makes me wish they'd bring the 4 wheel steering idea back to life.  I wonder how much the turning radius has grown???

My '05 2500 is terrible in tight parking lots.  It's like trying to manuever a Hook N' Ladder but without the rear steering.  I hope they improved the horrible turning radius on these trucks.  I would buy the 4 wheel steering in a heartbeat (no pun intended).  I was so disappointed in GM for discontinuing it.

Can’t wait till motor trend or car and driver does a test probably take twice as long to get to 60 as the gas. Cool if you like it

Have you driven the "ecodiesel" or the new GM diesel?  If not do you just enjoy putting things down you do not know about?  Do you not enjoy 30+ mpg?  Just a few questions a have after reading your negative posts.

I don't know how some of you guys survive in traffic

Back in the days I merged onto the Autobahn with a 1.0L 50HP four banger VW Polo...

If the diesel for the half ton truck gets close to 300 HP and 500 lb⋅ft, then it'll be plenty to merge onto a North American highway.

And I wanna see a semi catching up. Must be a hell of a machine.

Agreed.  With all this talk about not being able to merge into traffic I should be dead hundreds of times over.  My '73 c10 literally could not beat a late 90s civic (tried quite a few times haha) and I never feared merging.  Learned to drive in a '99 2500 6.0 and a 1993 c3500 with the 6.5, again no problems.  Maybe if people weren't so impatient we wouldn't have so many wrecks.  Trucks have generally gotten faster and more powerful yet there seems to be an ever increasing amount of people who complain how slow they are.

As I stated I spent many years driving diesels when they first came out to the early 2000s. My job change and started driving 1/2 tons. My father drives a pristine 98 Ram, my mother a semi pristine 2000 Ford diesel they wouldn’t give them up. Yes I test drive every new model when they come out. I get flashbacks of merging on the freeway trying to merge not being able to get up to speed before your on the freeway. Then stoping to get fuel, the gas pumps will be empty the couple diesel pumps will be combo pumps with gas vehicles pumping gas. The 3/4 and up diesels are fine now, with they exception of the emissions that’s a different topic. Now there’s no real savings in buying diesel fuel, gas 1/2 tons get good fuel mileage for trucks. Their performance rivals muscle cars of the past. I’m still wondering what the advantages are of a diesel in a 1/2 ton.

I don't understand why you feel it is necessary to manually shift an automatic transmission.  The 6 speed transmission has been in production for more than 10 years now, and it has the reputation of being a very reliable transmission.  It wouldn't surprise me if they have built over half a million of them by now.  You could very likely count the number of drivers that insist on manually shifting this transmission on one hand. The transmission is programmed to get the best economy with the least amount of wear.  Sometimes what you read on the internet is just wrong.

I manually shift the 6-speed because it's programming sucks.  Driving up my road (don't know the grade) probably 6ish % and 1/4 of mile at 20mph speed limit the transmission will go all the way into 4th gear.  If I put my put my foot on the accelerator it will drop to 2nd and do this a few times.  The transmission is in the correct gear when I start from a stop (1st) and when I coast on the highway at 65-75 in 6th.

I've noticed a trend with the Emergency Flasher Button...

All the manufacturers on all their vehicles are making the buttons smaller and tucking them in out of the way places.

Unfortunately, I use mine on my 02 a lot.  On the freeways there is lot of panic brakes causing severe congestion,

so I don't get rear'd I put on the flashers to at least buy a few partial seconds more of the drivers behind me.

In part because of this, I much prefer the amber rear signals.

For the mirrors, I can't tell if the non-tow mirrors have convex in them.

I'm just thrilled the steering wheel is FINALLY centered!!!!

However, I will never buy another first model year, did that with my 14 and regret it nearly every day with so many issues. I'll wait a few years for them to sort things out and see if these are shakers too...

Also re power (diesel and gas)- the new truck is significantly lighter, which will give it a big performance boost. So (for example) a 300 HP engine in the new truck might perform like a 350 HP engine in today’s truck (numbers completely made up for the sake of explaining the overall point).

You can wait for the 2020's & you'll always be able to say in hindsight... :)

Am surprised few others have talked about or mentioned the centered steering wheel this round.

If you don't mind me asking, what problems have you run into owning a first year? I've had a 14 since December of 13, so I'm in the same boat. I've had to replace my passenger side window regulator, those recalls that covered the airbag and seatbelt, and a rear pinion seal leak. That's about everything major I can remember that happened on it's own.

Of course I have a few "annoyances" my wood trim always rattles with any bass on the music I'm playing. The newer (15s, 16s, etc) don't do that. Steering wheel click noises, etc. But nothing to make me regret my 14. I love my truck.

The typical recalls of course, I got those too. but some others are:

1) AC Condenser went out on me 400 miles from home on a 102 degree day

2) AC/Vented seats have broken 4x I think, maybe 5, but they keep fixing it because it keeps re-breaking within the 1 year warranty of them fixing it.

3) Heated seats have broken 3x, same as above they keep fixing it

4) Navi screen stopped working, HMI cable

5) Radiator busted, think this was a recall but had issues before the recall came out

6) Exhaust squeak, from flapper valve, replaced 2x and keeps coming back, just gave up them fixing it thinking I'll either get a new truck or get an exhaust

7) burns 1.5 - 2 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles

8) Hood release cable broke

9) Rusting frame is the worst I've seen, posted Pics in the Rusting Frame thread

10) shocks are completely shot, currently at 63,000 miles but they were shot a while ago

11) Shakes from about 77-82mph and on long hauls its beyond annoying

12) had issues when on the highway just cruising the RPMS will scream near redline and then catch itself

13) every time it shifts between V8 and V4 it revs my RPMS by about 500. doesn't seem like much, but i feel I'm in tune with the car and feel pulsing

With all that said, I love the looks of the truck, but disappointing how many times it's breaking. The major concern I have now is the amount of oil it drinks and wondering if I am in for something more serious down the road. I do Mobil 1 Full synthetic DEXOS every 6,000 miles, and around the 3,000 mile mark I'm adding approx 2qrts.
