An ingenious solution for a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place - a locking dust cap for a capless gas filler pipe. Of course, GM didn't say it was available under recall, or worse, at no cost to the owners -  likely because it is not free, just "available".

Let's see if I'm wrong and they really do hand them out for free. If not, nothing more than a joke on owners, forcing a buyer of a $50K vehicle to pay extra for an  extra gas cap instead of designing a "free" passive dust shield integral with the fuel door for the capless pipe, like the new Traverse - and who are they kidding, this "lock" was not really designed to provide security like a locking threaded gas cap for a standard fill pipe, this "lock" is necessary to keep this unthreaded kludge from falling off. Looks like a real quick design for the keylock portion too, as if water wouldn't seep past that retractable cover for the keyslot, or when inserting a wet key in the rain and later freeze in the tumblers just like it used to do in the same type keyslots of the 50's - 60's era push button door handles or even in dry weather waiting for someone to jamb their fat mitts in there trying to unlock that cheapo lock and break off the key!  Then it's: "No gas for you!"

I see the part out there...Cheap plastic cover.  $15-$18 depending who you get it from. $15 on ebay (free shipping)

I suppose it's better than nothing. I just ordered one.

And you're right. The fact that GM says "Notify the customer that GM had made available a locking gas cap for drivers that operate in these dirty or dusty environments. This will protect the fill area from dirt intrusion and protect the fuel system.", tells you that they're not free.

List price at the online GM parts places is $27.74. I'll bet that's what the dealers are going to want for them

I am on my second F150 work truck with the cap-less fuel tank and never had a problem with anything getting into it.  Since the 2019 looks more like the F150 then maybe GM should have done a better job copying the cap-less fill area!

I don't think anyone here has reported an issue directly related to the cap-less fill. It's just proactive talk. A dust cover of some sort can't hurt.

Ha, Ha... The 2019 looks nothing like a Ford.  I don't understand how people think that.

Got my goofy cap. Impulse buy for sure! Lol! But for $15, I’ll throw it on there until it annoys me! Lol! It actually fits on there pretty good and will definitely prevent stuff from getting in the tank. It’s a bit wonky getting off. If you have a lot of keys on your keychain, it’s better to keep the key separate as it takes 2 hands to remove the thing. A lot of keys on the keychain get in the way of easy removal.0c0e49b43459ab07e1ab3f1a06587d92.jpg

Next someone will want a cover for the key slot - it can accumulate dirt, water, rust, etc.

I’ve never seen dirt behind the fuel door, but I have seen snow/rain a few times. So I guess liquid contamination is my major concern. If the lock on it starts giving me grief, it’ll go in the trash.
