2016 Sierra "Power Steering" whine

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas,

I've been noticing a whining noise coming out of the front-left side of my truck over the last few days. It's been colder lately, around -6°C or so. It sounds identical to a power steering pump that's low on fluid or on it's way out. However, the truck has electronic power steering and does not use fluid. Has anyone here noticed a whining type of sound that increases with engine RPM and figured out what's going on? It somewhat comes and goes, but generally is very noticeable all the time. Would rather figure it out before whatever is causing the sound inevitably gives out or falls apart.

Thanks,

Water pump seals is my guess via the internet?  It has plagued GM and myself included lucky for me it does not do it anymore......

Oil pump?

Oil Pump Cold Start Rrrrp or Rasp

The oil pump design has changed from a gerotor gear type pump to a two speed vane type pump for fuel economy reasons. At temperatures of 32°F (0°C) or colder, when the engine has been sitting for a few hours it is possible to have air enter the pump through normal oil drainback. Upon startup the owner may hear a short Rrrrp or Rasp coming from the front of the engine. It is most often heard during a remote start. There is nothing wrong with the oil pump or oil system. No repairs should be attempted for this condition.

Thanks for that, it does match a lot of the symptoms described there. Strange that it only started doing it the last 2 days after 65,000 kms and a second winter though. Other than that, it does sound similar. I'll see tomorrow when the temperature hits 10 degrees.

Get a mechanics stethoscope and look for the source of the sound.
Dealer, warranty.
:happysad:
The dealer/warranty is not a solution where I live unfortunately.

belt driven Vacuum Pump is my guess. When it goes, either sends metal shavings into the motor as it is plugged into the block oil galley....taking out the motor.....or it sends engine oil into the vacuum line to the brake booster causing a $1900 repair bill.

Thanks, I'll check into it. That sounds fairly drastic for a newer truck. Good stuff.

It was not the alternator after all. It was the vacuum pump.

  • 2 years later...

Yeah I know it's an old thread.. I have the exact issue described at the top.. it's all the time, not just start up. Cant hear it much with the window up, though it is loud. I poked around with a stethoscope and the loudest whine noise came from a component on the oil pan, so I believe it to be the pump. Also my valves tick a little wich is noth indicator
