aftermarket pulley

Recommended Posts

i'm thinking about investing in the ASP pulley, but i've heard that if installed it might mess with the cooling and alternator... how many people out there have this setup?... i'm curious to hear how its been working out.

The ASP pulleys are good for about a 10hp gain. The only time I don't recommend installing them is if you are running after market amps that will draw alot of power.

what if i were to throw in a higher output alternator and a red top battery...?

I would try the Optima Red Top first. Then if you have any charging probs you could upgrade the alternator.

It really depends on what kind of driving you do. I talked to a buddy at a local speed shop and he said the pully dosen't allow the alternator to charge the battery when idling. When you take off and get the RPM's over about 800 then it will charge the battery. So I guess this wouldn't be a prob unless you sit in traffic for a couple of hours or do a lot of stop and go driving. An add on digital voltmeter might not be a bad idea to keep an eye on things! :jester:

Hope this helps! :seeya:

thanks for the input... i'm in Tucson, so it is kinda a lot of stop and go traffic. depending on what time of day your driving.

thats kind of wierd that it doesnt charge except for a certain RPM. the aftermarket belt does hit the alternator though, correct?... so i would figure it would still be running it. unless the addition of the pulley makes it turn at a lower speed. which would be even wierder.... i dunno...

i guess i have to look into it more.

I was running with the stock alternator pulley for about a month when I was having belt issues. The only time my alternator couldnt keep up was at night, at idle with the lights on. The lights would dim just a hair. Nothing to really worry about. The only reason I see that you NEED a overdrive alternator pulley is if you have a amp or electric fans or something.
