Brake Issue after front bearings replaced

Recommended Posts

I just replaced the front bearings on both sides of my 99' Silverado Z71. But now the brakes are giving me issues. When im going slow is where i have the issues. It feels as if they lock up and all you hear is kinda like a bad power steering noise. the pads are almost new. I dont know what this could be. Can anyone help.

To be honest I've never had abs kick in before. It feels like my brakes are fighting back and theres no actual stopping. I almost rear ended someone while testing the bearing. It litterally happens 1/4 the time i brake going under 15mph. I pulled the ABS fuse and put her back on my lunch break and tested it but no dice.

I did them. No issues that i could see. New bearings, placed the abs lines where they originated. Might pull the wheel off tomorrow and double check. the only thing i had to do was shave the brake dust shield, was almost non existent. So now its basically just the bolt holes.

Does it feel like the brake pedal is kicking back into your foot? Disconnect both of your front wheel speed sensors and try it again.

So after work i unplugged both sensors. Wonderful ride home after that. I plugged the drivers side sensor when i pumped gas, also fine drive. Back to brake issue again after plugging in the passenger side sensor. So looks like ill have to pull the wheel and clean the sensor. Does that sound about right?

No. The internal SS  ring is crushed. Seen it a lot. Go ahead and get another hub and don't go cheap or you will have this kind of issue.

Detroit Axle makes GM's hubs. Here is their version which will work perfect. http://amzn.to/2AXN3l3

Glad I could help... NOW HIT THOSE LIKES!

So I finally got the set of Detroit axle bearings I ordered in December. Just replaced the passenger side bearing again but the issue is still occuring. It happens exactly at 10mph now, and no abs light. I torqued the new axle nut to 165ftlb (hopefully that's right). I haven't replaced the drives side with the new DA bearing yet.

If I can chime in, I am new to this forum and looking at the same problem with my truck. I have a '96 Yukon 4-wheel drive that had a failed right-front ABS sensor. The ABS light came on the dash and I read the code with a scan tool. The sensor showed an open circuit, so I ordered a new GM sensor and replaced it. The light went off by itself with the new sensor installed, but now when I brake and get down to 10 mph the ABS pump kicks in and I have to really push the pedal to come to a complete stop. The front bearings in that hub seemed fine and I did not see any issues with the ring when I looked thru the sensor opening when I replaced the sensor.

Anyone out there with thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

So honestly I don't know what to tell you man. I ended up buying the Detroit Axles hubs, but that didn't fix my issue either. So i pulled them both off again, pulled out the speed sensors and "cleaned" them until my multi meter read ~300mv I think is the magic number. Even that was kinda hit or miss. Eventually I just put it back together and it just worked. All i can say is try that and it might work for you.

I also read that rust on the hub might keep the sensor out too far from the ring and at low speeds activates the ABS. I'm going to pull it apart again and really clean the hub surface, reinstall the sensor, and see if that helps. I'll let you know. Thanks for the reply.
