Articulating Running Boards Retrofit - How To

I'm considering this mod on my 2016 Silverado LT double cab.  Could I theoretically purchase a set of these tri-mode steps, remove the end caps and cut some off the end of the running boards to make these match up perfectly with the double cab (AMP Power step directions say to remove 7" for the double cab)?  I really want to keep with the OEM look and these look much better than the AMP Power Steps....

On page 6 there is a picture of a silver double cab with them mounted. 

And I know somewhere, there is a video on how to cut them to fit a double cab. (maybe early in this thread)

Thanks for the reply, I've been following this thread and noticed pages 5 and 6 discuss fitting to the frame.  I'm wondering if I can cut the boards down to fit to the size of the double cab.... probably overkill but while it looks awesome, I still think its obvious they are for a crew cab.

BTW, your truck looks awesome! I have a Tungsten Metallic Z71 and went with black chrome 5656 style wheels.  Definitely plan on painting the steps like you did

Thank You! I did a Raptor bed liner spray kit on them. 

2 kits actually, since I screwed the 1st kit up on my 4th bottle! haha. Tried to fix a spot while it was wet. BAD IDEA!

 

I also peeled the chrome off, which then left 2 channels on the top and bottom of the running board that I filled in with bondo. Then sanded all and coated. But now, since I took the chrome off, the end caps have a little gap in them. 

 

Bed liner spray doesn't stick to chrome well and I didn't want it to bubble like my front mustache piece did when I bed liner sprayed over the chrome. Within 6 months I had to scrap it off and grind all the chrome off (down to grey plastic) and then redo the bed liner spray.

To me, I think it looks BETTER like this picture. 

I went from wheel to wheel running boards to the tri mode boards, which leave the back section empty looking and at first I really didn't like the looks with the boards tucked in.

 I like how you get that little extra bit in the back with the double cab. 

Obviously its just opinion, but I'd leave it just as it is. 

 

But to answer your question, after having my tri mode boards completely dissembled, yes you can cut them down. 

For good result, you'd need a damn straight way to cut them perfectly across though. 

But the arm connection point is further up towards the front. You could easily move that rear end cap up.

for anyone who is going to do this themselves and build their own wire harness, shoot me a message. When I bought my connectors I bought double everything in case I screwed up. I'd sell what I have for my cost. 

But I couldn't find the connectors that go to the motors, I ended up straight wiring those into the harness and if I have to replace a motor i'll just cut and splice them. 

 

But if you do that, make sure you use a good water proof connector!! Don't be like Bubbas backyard stereo shop

I have seriously thought about traveling the country and host 2 week clinics in major cities

But having to travel with everything I need to possible accomplish this is not an easy task.

However, I do build these harnesses now so you can install it. The installation is fairly simple.

Fully functional, but you have to modify the boards to physically fit.
