07.5 dmax awful sound in reverse

My friends dmax makes a horrible sound when put in reverse like a popping banging metal on metal sound the truck is a 07.5 Chevy cc sb 4x4 85k on it any thoughts our has this happens to anyone else?

is the noise coming from the trans?

No it’s definitely the rear end and it’s sounds bad
