You can change it anytime. I would wait a few hundred miles to let the oils flush any out any junk in the engine.

There is a myth about not using synthetic until the engine is broken in. That is all it is, a myth.

Good info in the forums @ bobistheoilguy.com

I prefer the Mobil 1 products. I prefer to stay with the group IV synthetics.

Amsoil is good oil, but I don't care for their distribution method.

4K should be fine. I would not exceed what the on-board computer says without doing an oil analysis.

Transdyn seems to be the prefered synthetic for the Allison.

I too prefer the Mobil synthetics but I use Delvac 1. It's a heavy duty synthetic. You can only get it from Mobil distributors or from the freeway truck stops by the gallon. I use the on-board computer to tell me when to change the oil. I change the filter every 3,000 miles (since it's so small). As my 8.1 uses a quart every 3,000 miles, I top it off with about a quart and a half every 3,000 miles when I change the filter. Since that equates to about 23% new oil every 3,000 miles, I feel comfortable with using the on-board computer for change intervals. It's been averaging anywhere from 8,000 to 11,000 miles between changes.

Hacksaw,

I agree with you on the Delvac 1. That is actually what I am using in my truck. I'm surprised you are getting 8-11K on your on-board. Are you 95% long distant highway?

I'm doing oil analysis establishing a baseline with the Delvac 1. So far the oil is holding up @ 7600 miles but the copper is a bit high (most new style engines are). We’ll see what it looks like @ 11K soon.

How does Delvac compare to Mobile 1? I am using Mobile 1 SuperSyn and changing the oil every 3,000. I kind of like Hilliard's approach as I wouldn't be wasting the fluid. Eventually I am planning to change to a Mobile 1 filter w the filter relocation kit.

Pancho,

I believe Delvac 1 was originally made for diesel engines which is why they call it a heavy duty syn. After doing some research, I found that it would work great in gas engines as well. I've used this oil previously in a powerstroke that I had before trading it for my current truck. I also use it my Acrua MDX. I change it in the MDX every 7500 miles in accordance with the factory rec.

I agree.

Delvac 1 is a really good oil. Regular Mobil 1 is good and easier to get and not as expensive at least.

Amsoil is slowly getting out in the local markets. Just a matter of time. Synthetics are catching on just will take a little time. A lot of people don't like the fact that you can't find it at the local Wal-Mart. But then some really like the fact that it is delivered to their door. To each his/her own.

I also use the group IV synthetics. If I'm going to pay top dollar for a synthetic I want it to be a true synthetic and not a refined petroleum oil.

If you extend the oil drains it is a good idea to have a used oil analysis done. It can tell you a lot about your engine and how your oil is holding up. I just did one for a friend on his 3.0 V6 with 5k miles on the Amsoil he is running. Oil looked good and wear metals were well within normal to below normal ranges.
