Oil Pressure 6.0

Recommended Posts

No but it's a good gauge of health is all and I am curious for my own doing. When I next change oil in my 17 and my miled out 05 I am going to compare them... pretty sure the 05 will have more pressure across the board than the 17 does. Why? Who knows.. If they are all low like mine it's for a reason... something has more clearance than it used too.

I drove both my LQ9 (6.0) and L96 (newer 6.0) today and can assure you the older based LS motors run more oil pressure.

Oil psi cost power, power cost mileage, manufacturers are doing everything they can to get mileage, the newer ecotech GM engines even run a dual displacement oil pump that runs low psi under 3,500rpm and high psi over.

My old big block engines would peg the needle and ran a ton of psi, doesn't mean they lasted longer.

Runs quality oil and filter and don't worry about it.

That's all fine and dandy but I build these things as a pretty serious hobby and not a hell of a lot changed between generations.... hence why are some so low and some not. All things equal the engines should run the same pressure up to when the relief valve above the oil filter pops..... but this new ones idle is pathetically low.... GM hasn't really changed much in the way of oil pumps and doesn't have a lower pressure pump spring so the pressure is being lost somewhere. Maybe the secondary relief is leaking all the time.... who knows. The variable one in the newer trucks is simple..... you have a solenoid controlled relief that stays open up to 3700 rpm and then they will peg the gauge. I am sure I will find out where it's loss is when it piles up lol.
