Reasonable dmax miles

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a used dmax under 35k. What is a reasonable amount of miles for a dmax? Most of everything I see is right over 120k. When is the point I should be expecting something to fail?

Thanks

I would not touch a used one without a few years warranty left unless you like very expensive repairs. People get rid of them out of warranty for a reason.

Well considering a brand new one is twice my budget. That's not going to happen. Sounds like you've been burned before. I drive too much to worry about a warranty. I drove 17,000 miles in the past nine months.

17k in nine months? I was putting 50k a year on...and that was personal.

While I understand burning through a warranty, the repair costs associated with these newer diesels can be considerable. Unless you can verify historic maintenance completed, you could be buying someone's problem that they unloaded.

A lot of us have owned diesels before and read the horror stories on these forums everyday. With the introduction of the DPF, that was the straw that broke my interest in buying another.

Well you know what they say about diesel trucks. If you cant afford the 15k repair, you can't afford the truck. These trucks are not cheap to repair.

Diesel go Dodge. 100k is broke in. Buddy bought one and loves it. Pre urea tank emissions as well. Use the search here and Google it.

I would say to myself...Do I REALLY need a diesel?

I came out of a Dodge Cummins, several, well actually A LOT of them...the only good ones were the 5.9l, everything else has too much emissions that makes them unreliable.

In the last three trucks, I piled over a million miles behind the wheel of a Dodge Cummins combined. I know their issues quite well...they are not perfect by any means.

Definitely not perfect but track record is much better than the current GM diesel and truck. Read here and elsewhere about the redundant problems that plague the DMax. No mechanical device is perfect. If it was it wouldn't have to be redesigned. I had many gas Dodges. There quality took a nose dive late 90s. My pops had the diesel and had more wear out issues than breakage. He still has a gas 1500 at 80 he drives. I would look at the Ford before GM. I looked at them all and decided I didn't need a diesel. My opinion is research and word of mouth.

Neither of ours made 250k before an overhaul. Not impressed, considering the number of gas trucks with many more miles running an original, cheaper engine.

In the OP's situation, there are a few options.

1. Buy an older higher mile diesel, pre DEF, save for repairs.

2. Sell your life to the bank, mess with getting warranty work done.

3. Buy a nice gasser, run to 300k miles, drop in a new engine for less than a set of diesel injectors cost.

If you want a diesel, gotta pay to play.

Totally agree! I just talked to my painter and his DMAX now has 600K+ and I told him a guy I know just bought a used on with 180K miles on it. He totally agrees that his next one when and if this one dies will be used because what is the point of spending 80K when I can pick one up for 25K and get 300-400K out of it?

And to the poster the Duramax went from 2002 to 2016? With a few renditions for power/emissions etc! hardly the reason for the redesign? If anything it's still same displacement and casted material? Testament to it's longevity.....Hands down over Cummins any day!

But like he is stating you GOTTA PAY TO PLAY! No thanks I will take the gasser for now until my 4.5 slice of heaven comes!

The other reason NOT to buy used is all too often someone buys a diesel, throws a programmer on it, flogs the living daylights out of it, then pulls the programmer and trades at the first hint of trouble...the next owner gets that heavily abused machine.

It's either I use my gasser and get 6-8 mpg pulling a camper to Montana or get a diesel for a 5th wheel and get 10-14mpg and not have to worry about elevation or the tail wagging the dog.

This is a common "whose got the better diesel" trolling...there isn't one that's better than another. In my travels I've seen a good many Duramax sitting along the road dead or smoking badly because of a failed injector...if you take notice, most of the hotshotters run Dodge trucks.

They all have their faults...
