Powertrax no-slip traction system

Recommended Posts

Here's my $.02 on LSD's. Lockers like this are undesireable to me for two reasons. One they are very noticeable when they engage and usually noisy. Second, they are more like an on off switch.

My background is autocrossing and road racing. For those applications, I prefer a clutch type or gear type (I currently use a Quaife in my Honda CRX race car.) These types of LSD's apply variable amounts of torque to each wheel which allows for smoother engagement. Another reason I like this type is because they can apply torque to both wheels while the car is turning. A locker cannot properly do this because it cannot handle the fact that the outside wheel is spinning fasther than the inside wheel. A clutch or gear type LSD handles this speed variance seemlessly.

Granted, these characteristics are what I desire in a race car, for a truck, smoothly applying torque to both wheels exiting a turn is less of an issue.

My personal preference for a truck would still be for a clutch type LSD. I believe Auburn Posi's are clutch type not sure though. Clutch types will last A VERY LONG time in street applications if you change the fluid regularly. They are quiet and engage smoothly.

Also, do your research with gears. Not all gears are created equal. The last thing you want is a ring and pinion gear that whine at freeway speed. Talk to a few shops that install them. Find out which ones tend to be the quietest. I seem to remember Richmond being a very good gear. I believe that's what I put in my Camaro.

I researched the Power Tax for installation in my Impala. I contacted several places that deal with differentials and they didn't have much to say about it other than if you install it in a low horse power vehicle then it should be fine. The problem with it is the open carrier isn't made to withstand the torque that is apply when you lock up both wheels and it snaps.

I went with the Eaton posi. Got it on EBay brand new for $100 cheaper than anywhere else.

I have the Powertrax NoSlip Traction System in my 89' with 4.56 gears and a 383 stroker that puts out over 450hp. I would recomend it to anybody who has a daily driver to the all out racer! I like it because it unlocks around turns and when you give it the gas it locks and the best thing is it is quiet! You never here it engaging or disengaging!! The only thing I dont like about the Lockers with the cluthes in them is that you have to use a Limited Slip Additive and change it often to make the locker work properly!! Id put my money on the Powertrax!!:flag:
