Manual to Auto swap

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I am completely restoring a 92 Chevy 1500 sport. It's a 4.3L with 5 spd trans. I have done several upgrades here and there and what I'm wanting to do is put an auto trans in the truck. Cld someone give me a list of what all I will need to do this? Any help wld b greatly appreciated. Thanks

IMO, I would keep the 5 speed. The truck is geared for it, if it is the original rear end. If you put in the automatic, you will want to put lower gears in. It's probably a 3.08 now. You would need to upgrade to at least a 3.73 if you want any grunt with the automatic.

just needs shifter for your auto.

ingenuity, or aftermarket.

there may be a controller needed if electronic 4 speed auto.

I have the v8 factory on nv3500.. 3.73 gear. not sure why they'd put tall gears on a bent crank v6.

shouldn't have to change anything.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was 3.9 rear.

if the reason is sloppy shifting for wanting to swap.. they do need some help.

There is a hurst by core shifters that is quite dramatic.

a real short throw...very defined.

I drive mine all day sometimes, city or not.. very easy going.

The reason for the swap is that I'm eventually going to put an LS1 or 6.0L n the truck. Plus I'd prefer the auto with V8 when it comes to pickups. I've already got the interior stripped out and just thought I cld go ahead and change out column and instrument cluster for the auto trans while I had it all out. I know I need column, cluster, trans mount plate, and probably the drive shaft. I just didn't know if I needed anything else like a wire harness, somethin special for speedometer to wrk, etc. But if 5spd is best for 4.3 I'll leave it like it is. I just know truck is very weak. Plus it doesn't get but about 12-13mpg.

Sounds like a good project. If it was me, I would wait until I get everything together. Do you're research, get all the parts needed and then attack. Probably would be best to leave everything engine and drivetrain wise as is until.
