Early Oil Change?

Recommended Posts

Engine oil filter out of my 2017 Equinox...metal flakes, paint chips, and RTV/gasket material. Approximately 1500 miles...

Never seen a filter apart! Did you cut in half and pull element out?

The 2.4l is a cartridge, element is exposed and only takes a utility knife to remove from the core.

I also, however, have a filter cutter to cut open steel filter housings and retrieve the elements. They cost about $25 from the hot rod places like Jegs and Summit.

I cut all my filters open...sometimes it's shocking what you find...

About 1,000 miles on my 2017 5.3 now and I want to change out the factory oil. My question is, do dealers get pissed or "flag" you or anything if when I go in for their first "free" oils change and they see different filter and drain plug?

Also, why do you guys use to track all the work you do and get some , parts etc, for your tricks?

Thanks!

As far as tracking work, I have a small notebook (Rite-in-rain brand) that I record any work and fluid changes along with date and mileage.

I could also produce receipts, but they would be credit card receipts as I buy stuff in bulk and well in advance. For example I bought ten 5-qt jugs of 5w30 M1 and ten 10w30 M1 last fall on sale when my stash of Schaeffers (around 30 gallons) finally started to dwindle...I bought a case of Wix filters for the truck and a case of AC Delco for the Equinox.

Dealers don't care if you change your own oil. But if every scheduled maintenance oil change is not on record with the certified technician GM will void your warranty should something major happen. I actually have a buddy who bought a brand new Dodge changed his own oil and around 29k had a major motor failure. Dodge did deny him warranty 100%. With that being said I changed my own oil.

I changed mine myself at about 750 miles. Ever see a metallic / metal flake paint job? That's how it appeared when stirring the contents in the drain pan.....nasty looking, almost black.

Exactly what mine looked like @1000 As for Sdeeter19555 the filter off my 5.3L opened up like yours was easily double the amount of break in material. Everybody is different but I can go extended oil changes all day but would loose sleep if I couldn't change "Brand New Motor" before 2K

I had just the opposite, had number 4 rod bearing fail in a Subaru FXT at 15k. They didn't even care to see records, just asked if the oil had been changed. Replaced the short block under warranty without question.

I think they would be pressed to deny warranty for oil changes. Oil will either look changed or like sludge, fairly easy to tell if it was changed on inspection.

Highly suggest a magnetic drain plug

This was my oil change yesterday just under 75K miles

That should be easy for anyone. I keep all my maintenance records online in the GM owners section under services. I change the oil or do any other maintenance on either my 2015 2500 or my 2006 Cadillac, I enter in a new record for date and mileage. No need to keep any book or paper lying around. Any dealer can see the information with a just a few key strokes. It is not required, by law, to be on record with some "certified technician". The Federal Trade Commission makes that very clear in their consumer guidance. The OEM is on the hook to prove that the owner did something wrong.

I never use a dealer for anything from my lawn mower, thru my personal vehicles, right on up thru my commercial vehicles and equipment. I have never had a dealer shop (several different brands) want any documentation on oil or the changes in over 40 years, even with warranty issues. I suppose it could happen, but the odds are not that they will.

Stealership can donate my free oil changes to the homeless.

And that notebook listing "might" be looked at by someone who shouldn't know what "might" have been spent.

Potential evidence.
