Early Oil Change?

About 1,000 miles on my 2017 5.3 now and I want to change out the factory oil. My question is, do dealers get pissed or "flag" you or anything if when I go in for their first "free" oils change and they see different filter and drain plug?

 

Also, why do you guys use to track all the work you do and get some , parts etc, for your tricks?

You mentioned different filter and drain plug, but you're asking about first free oil change to get factory oil out... little confused on that, not sure how you swapped those out without draining/losing some of the oil.. :D

 

Might depend on the dealer. I went in after I got pass the 1K mark, and I took it to the dealer I bought it from(35/40/mins away). Told them I wanted my first oil change and to get the factory oil out since I broke my engine in, and all I got was, are you sure you want to use the first one with so little miles on your truck? Told them yeah and there was no problem.

 

When I had bought my other ride,Trailblazer from another dealer, I was waiting in line to get my oil changed, and they turned one of their customers away(he had a vette), because his Oil Life said he had 45 or 50% left... not sure how many miles he had... lol... he wasn't a happy camper leaving... :D

Lol what I meant about the parts was that it would be a visual clue easily identifiable by them that I had changed oils myself early. I will be putting in the dimple drain plug and probably Amsoil filter and oil.

you are able to get your "complimentary" oil changes whenever the heck you want. They don't care if you chaneg your oil in between. though I doubt hardly anyone does.

 

Why not wait until you have to do it yourself to put in the new plug? If you can't live without it, then drop it off with the truck and have them put it in for you.

I would think they could care less but than again never know. I changed my factory fill right under 1K miles and replaced it with Mobil 1 oil and new filter.

Do my own maintenance unless strapped for time thus take it to a buddy's shop.

Keep all receipts in a file folder along with those for mods, tires, wipers, shocks, air/cabin filters, etc......

When selling/trading vehicles this gives people peace of mind and assures me of getting desired trade/sales price.

They don't care. At least my dealership doesn't. I changed the oil and filter out at 500 and then again at 2k miles on our Suburban. I let the OLM alone so it would count down. That way by the time it got down to 10% the Suburban had 7k miles on it and then I had them do my first free oil change. I also installed a Fumoto valve. They didn't care. So now I got one more oil change and tire rotation to go and I will start doing it myself after that.

On our van the toyota dealership refused to do an oil change at 1000 miles even thought I had 3 free coupons. I argued and argued finally agreed if I used 2 of the coupons. They cited their "special 0w-20" oil they use not needing to be changed so early.

 

I never used the 3rd coupon

I purchased my 2016 / Leftover RCSB with (2) miles on Odometer. Of course put (7)on it testdriving..

Advised my dealer that my first oil change by me would be at 500M or so and service advisor had No issue and thought it was great idea.

 

At 505 miles,, replaced factory "blend" oil with full synthetic M1, PF63 filter and magnetic drain plug...

 

After having 4 new Trucks + 1 Tahoe, always changed factory oil at the 500 mile range and added magetic plugs

Just sold my 96 Tahoe with 248K on it to buddy and its still running strong with good compression and no blow-by..

 

Basically,, it can't hurt to get factory build particle out as early as possible and my Dad was first to recommend

this as he was Chevy / GMC guy with many years of engine building..

Swapped out OEM oil filter for M1-212 at 1,000 miles, just because I bought two 5qrt + filter Mobil 1 oil change kits on sale. (In order to get the 8 qrts needed).

 

Changed oil and filter at 3,000 miles last weekend with Mobil 1.

 

All way over-kill - oil still looked new.

 

Left the DIC alone - will get the free oil changes started when it says to, or one year whichever occurs first.

I have had the BS at Dealership about not changing @ 1000kJust do it yourself and be glad you did! Go back @5-6K for the free one!

Is it actually necessary? I understand the old skool thinking but with vehicles today would this be a benefit? In my lifetime I have not ever had an engine fail or wear out from not changing the oil every 3k. This whole thing started when the oil companies decided they could make more money getting us motorheads to use thier products more. I always based oil change on use. Used to change the oil after an engine build at 1k but never heard that in today's vehicles. Research online is as biased per the author. I would like to see actual test results. Of course nowadays there is a percentage monitor telling you when as well. Interesting discussion.

I agree totally! Hey, I put my UOA out for public knowledge on the forum just so I could see the responses. Actually, I am in process of doing a study on this BS and will put the info out in time...seeing how I drive many K's it won't take forever.

 

I should have have taken the pictures of my Used Oil @ 1K If you rebuilt engines previously than you know the break in process. The newer engines are 100% better than yesterdays but cracking open a oil filter @1K and seeing with your own eyes even on a 2017 Engine is quite interesting. Yes, the filter does it's job and traps those large pieces of metal and yes some make it into the combustion process and burn off and others just hang out at the bottom of Pan forever never bothering anybody......

 

If it's new just dump it @1k and carry on about your business. If you don't and go to 7.5K I will bet dollars to donuts nothing different will happen during your ownership. The chances of you owning the vehicle until 200K are almost 0

Not to mention anything small enough to get in places like bearing surfaces and cause wear is not going to be visible..........

I change out all my new vehicle's engine oil no later than 2000 miles. I also change out all drive train lubes and fluids, including transmission filter, no later than 10,000 miles. All it takes is looking at a Xfer magnetic plug at 10K miles to see why. Both my 2013 1500 and my 2015 2500 by 10K miles, the Xfer plug looked like my cat had stuck its tail in a light socket. Lots of wear metal fragments on them both. Not so much on diffs, but it was noticeable. After those initial drive train changes and getting the factory stuff out of there, very little wear metals on the plugs later. That initial break in really shaves off a lot of metals in those boxes.
