Cam and tune pricing

Recommended Posts

2017 Sierra 5.3

I was thinking I want to do an exhaust and cat delete and then cam and dyno tune, would be nice to pick up some extra power and to have that throaty cam lope. After doing some research about cams I figured out with anything good sized you have to do lifters and valve springs and some other parts and really need a higher stall converter as well and that is more gab I wanted to do. So I looked around and a company named cam motion makes a stage 1 and stage 2 "drop in" cam, as in doesn't have huge lift or duration so doesn't need new valve springs or lifters or a higher stall converter or anything, just put the cam in and tune it. I looked up videos of the cam motion stage 2 and it actually does have a nice noticeable lope at idle and thought this would be a perfect choice. The cam is $450. So there is a reputable gm performance shop about 2 hours from where I live, won't say what shop, but I asked them for a just a labor quote on installing the cam and tuning the truck, as in I'll buy the cam, I'll buy my exhaust components and install them myself before hand, and all I need is the cam installed and a dyno tune. I was expecting somewhere around a $1,500-1,800 price to install a drop in cam and do a dyno tune. The price quote I got was $3,000 plus tax. I could be way off in what I expected but this seems like an extremely high price to me. Considering the heads don't need to come off to install this cam ( I don't think anyway?) does this seem like it's way to much money for what I'm wanting done? How much can a tune be? Just wondering if anyone with experience could tell me if this price quote is insane or if it seems about right. Thanks for any input in advance.
