Broken valve spring

Recommended Posts

So, truck died on the highway. CEL flashing, traction control light on. Towed to dealer, broken valve spring #3 cyl. Tech notes say that #3 plug was fouled, switched it with #1, same missfire code, blah blah blah. Came down to broken exhaust valve spring. Got my truck back, mileage worse by 1.5-2l/100km(4mpg). Did a pass on the highway today and noticed a "fluttering"sound. Thought my rear door wasnt closed. Tried a couple different things and noise is intermittent and only happens under load at 3500-5000 rpm.

Am i just being sensitive, or would there be valve/valve seat damage from the broken spring.

Another spring that is on its way out?

Anybody had similar issues?

Sounds like it is time to trade it in. You will never be satisfied with this one now........ Swing by Carmax for a Cash Quote to get started for comparison then hit up some dealers to see what their trade value is and any discounts that might apply. Truck shopping is fun, I try to do it a least every couple of years. You got plenty of cash right?

Take it back to the dealer that did the repair. Be nice and explain the repair wasn't made to your satisfaction. Dealers do make make mistakes. If they play hardball maybe agree to pay for any additional parts but labor for tear dwn and rebuild has already been paid for by you (assuming you were out of warranty).

Its been a few days now. After the first couple days of weird noise and crappy mileage, things seem to have cleared up. Perhaps it was the flapper valve on the exhaust sticking?

Whatever the problem was it seems to have gone away and things are back to normal.

So I finally took my truck back in. It was running better, but something was still off. The ticking sound was intermittent but fairly usual. It turns out that the broken valve spring also bent a pushrod. Waiting for parts out of Ontario.
