Black Silverado Detailing Help

Recommended Posts

Hello, long time lurker here. Just decided to join and see what its all about. I have a 2013 Camaro, and my pride and joy 2008 Silverado, with 6 inches of lift and a whole lot of other goodies. I bought the truck bone stock, and have slowly started to build it over the last few years.

My question today is about detailing it, I have just started an interest in detailing. My Silverado is black, and it has a ton of deep swirl marks. I have tried many products to try and take it out (M. Ultimate compound, Turtle wax speed compound, Turtle wax polish, Turtle wax Hard shell wax, and a few others.) and nothing seems to want to remove them. In the direct sunlight you can see massive amounts of swirl marks. After using the Ultimate compound on a buffer it seemed to take out a little of the marks but not really enough to be noticeable. I've read that Ultimate compound is one of the harshest compounds out there. Even that doesn't want to remove these swirl marks. I applied some Turtle wax hard shell wax and that seemed to make the paint pop but there was still swirl marks noticeable.

Thanks for any/all help!

Are you polishing by hand or with a machine? YOu mention buffer what kind?

Check out www.autogeek.net

I find blackfire polish and meguires M105 to work well on scratches and swirls

Its an art for sure. Takes practice and the right tools, but still takes time and patience to get results. But more importantly is keeping it swirl free after you get it looking nice for as long as you can. With black, its not long till they start showing up again. For me, i hang out at the Adams forums to learn. They have plenty of videos and a great forum community to learn from. Plus they have the products to get you there. Now I'm sure there are other places to get your info and products from. But thats where I'm comfortable at, and I like their product line. Good luck

Meguiars M105 to remove heavier swirls followed by M205 applied with correct pads followed by a good wax after. Look for Junkman videos on youtube or Autogeek or Detailed Image. Good luck with black it can literally wear you out trying to keep it clean and swirl free.

I've been a detailer for 40 years and the first thing you need to do is NEVER do circles when doing any kind of waxing or glazing by hand...ALWAYS follow the body lines. Another words, straight lines will give you better results and minimize swirls in Black or any color of paint.

I would use Imperial hand glaze by 3M to get rid of swirls...small amount will do along way. Small sections at a time and remove after half a hood or trunk lid and so on. Love Adams products and use them but are more then store brand products but will have better results using Adams. Love Americana wax for dark colors {old tub with plastic Black lid} have not used the new and improved Americana on new paint just as yet but has the Blue top. Take care of that paint and use TWO buckets to keep containments out of the water/soap.

Lastly...the sun is not your friend when washing/waxing. Cloudy day or inside is best!

^^^Good advice. Don't use circle/swirl motions when buffing or waxing a black vehicle. Always follow the body lines and use horizontal or vertical motions. Also, on my last black vehicle, I used black wax, which seemed to fill the little imperfections much better than lighter colored waxes.
