Range Shift Inhibited message

Recommended Posts

got this message on the DIC today. Came off freeway and got to the 2nd light (about 2000ft)and stopped at the light, car in front made the right hand turn, I stepped on gas pedal (excuse me, the fuel padal) and nothing, no moving at all. My buddy got the owners manual out and it said to try to put in park or neutral and re-select gear. Still no go. Called On Star, they did a diag and said all is well. On Start called mechanic at dealership that I bought truck at and he said it needs to be towed in. On Star called a towing company and I let them know to send flatbed. they came out and it is now at the dealerhip. They don't know what it is at this point... no other codes on the DIC.

Gave me a rental (brand new <5 miles> Tahoe to use and they will call me on Tuesday.

Anyone have this problem?

What was the fix?

Sure hope it is something simple, I really don't want them pulling the Allison.

Dang... 3 weeks old today!!! :smash:

I've seen this exact thing happen to a friend of mine only it was a F450 and it has the elctronic throttle and thats what was messed up on his, cost him about 300 bux but yours should be covered under warranty, I think that there is a fuse or relay or somehting for this, but if this blows it gets your brake lights and instrament panel lights and maybe more, someone please correct me if I am wring on this one, good luck

got a call from the dealer this afternoon, they were told by allison that the tranny MUST be replaced. Allison said there is a KNOWN problem, now why the *ell was this or any other truck sold with a known problem. I let the dealer know I was not happy (not with dealship, they are cool) about the tranny being replaced.

I asked what is the protocol about GM doing something about this... the truck has less then 650 miles on it.

he said to call GM at 800-GMC-Truck and make a claim... they did not give any more info then that.

Anyone able to give me info on this, how can I go about getting something like the extra $1000 rebate they are offering and a 7YR warranty.... not looking for a new truck... had to wait 8 weeks for this one and they are not making '03 any longer.

please give me your feedback or comments.

thanks

Dick

 Bummer, hate going through stuff like this, but....

Ummmm, so what's the issue, then? The dealer is going to replace the transmission since it is under warranty, right? I'm not sure why, other than the hassle of down-time, you are miffed. Warranty issues happen. My dealer would provide a rental of equal capability while the transmission is being ordered/replaced.

Not sure what the claim filing is about. Never had to do that for a warranty item. Maybe I'm not following the logic... :uhoh: Sorry, shouldn't have jumped in. The whole thing sounds weird to me.

You had a transmission breakdown during warantee. GM (and Allison) is standing behind their warantee. The defective transmission is being replaced.

Isn't that the way it works? What am I missing here?

  • 3 weeks later...

lrymal, BlackSilver

yeah, I more then likely would reply just like you did, if it didn't happen to me.

2 Yrs ago, my sister paid 37k for a ford and less then 500 miles on it, the tranny dies. I felt sorry for her, but couldn't understand the big deal... but now the shoe is on the other foot, it has happen to me and my new 45k truck.

yes, they did replace the tranny... but guess what, they replace with a reman tranny. (see pictures here, they are of the tranny that is installed in my truck now: http://1netweb.com/images/tranny/allison.htm

I am sure you won't understand this part either, the vaule of the my truck is less then someone that has all the orginal equipment/engine/trans... serial do not match now, so value is lower... tis bad enough when you drive off the lot, but 3 weeks later, you get another loss.

And to add to the fire, over the weekend, I have had problems with this tranny, pretty sure it is the tranny, will take into the dealer on monday to see what is up and hope they can identify the problem(s)

I did notice yesterday, (have truck back for a week) that I am now getting some kind of very loud howl/buzzing (noise occurring intermittently)

also have noticed 2 times what sounds like someone under the truck hitting the floor board, a very dull clunk, this happens while taking off from a stand still (like from a stop light)

Dealers. I don't like them. Very unsympathetic to folks who purchased such expensive rigs. After reading my mucho earlier message, I came across as unsympathetic also. Actually, in my case, through the decades, I have had a motor and a rear end replaced under warranty. Gosh, that was a long time ago. But, the truck seemed happy afterwards and nothing came across negative during trade-in.

Now, my stepdad was a real character in this sort of thing, along with my mother. He would simply send her down to deal with the dealer and she would perfecdtly play the role of a "hysterical, LOUD, and crying female". In the main lobby. She would do it. Amazing how more quickly things were fixed.

Not making light of your situation, but it does demo that we've been through this mess as well, although a long time ago.

Hey I can understand your frustration. Mine had to have the engine replaced at 16,000 miles due to a persistant coolant leak. There was 15lbs of pressure coming through the headbolt taps and they would never seal up tight. But they replaced it with a factory new engine. It took two weeks but they gave me a loaner at no cost so I wasn't too miffed. I too have experienced a problem with no tranny. Only mine happened at start-up and when I put it into reverse, the "R" indicator flashed. All I had to do was turn it off and start it up again. Took it to the dealer and they couldn't find any codes nor could they replicate it.

I think we all hate mechanical problems but the dealer and GM have stood by their product whenever Ihave had a problem. Sorry for your troubles but things do breakand sometimes its better to happen right away , get it fixed and enjoy the truck for many miles after. Good luck.
