Crank Postion Sensor

Recommended Posts

2016 2500 SLT 6.O just had the check engine light come one. Code reader say P0340 Crank Position Sensor. Truck does turn over a bit before it starts. Will be making an appointment with the dealer ASAP. Anything I should be aware of before I take it in?

Only aftermarket accessories is a plow professionally installed about 4 months ago.

Okay so I'm guessing after all the views no one has had this happen. I talked to a GM mechanic he said its not common on a truck with that low of miles (3100). He said it may just need a re-flash. Should I just clear the codes and see if it comes back? I don't want to waist a whole day of work at the dealership for something stupid but I have some trips planned the next couple weekends and I don't want to have issues.

Any advice is appreciated.

I would bring it in. It may not be worth a day's work but how about a breakdown while you're on one of these trips? I hate missing work for stupid reasons but hate breaking down during a personal trip even more. Especially if you have to take it to an unfamiliar dealer for repair. The computer throws codes for a reason clearing them usually just puts off the inevitable repair to a more inconvenient time. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Well just an update....dealer check it out. Couldn't find anything wrong. Cleared the code and test drove it. Didn't come back. they didn't want to rip into the motor if its just an anomaly. Said bring it back if it comes on again. About what I expected.

I had a crank position sensor put in at the dealer under warranty in 2010 on my 07 avy, maybe 50k on it at the time. The only symptom was extended cranking time to start.

Well in case anyone cares truck went back last Thursday they gave me a loaner. Had to leave it over night because they wanted to test the fix when the engine was cold. They consulted GM tech support for advice, maybe thats SOP these days. Anyway new sensor went in got it back Friday afternoon. drove over 200 mile yesterday with no lights and the extended crank seems to be gone so hopefully its fixed and it was just a bad sensor. time will tell.
