Fram Sure Drain tube for 2003 1500HD?

Recommended Posts

The first time I changed the oil in my 03 1500HD I had oil all over the place. Fram makes a drain tube called SUre Drain, but of course none are specified for the 2003 model year. I am going to assume that the 2002 is the same but not sure. I called Fram & they told me none are specified for that year but that doesn't mean others won't fit. He gave me the thread size of each of them. The SD4 (listed for the 2002) is 12mmX1.75. Does anyone know if the 2003 is the same?

Thanks,

Scot

I am 99% sure they did not change the thread size. They did change the filter howerver. The 2003 uses shorter version. The filter is the same other than the length. Most are using the earlier on.

I am using the Fumoto valve. I have seen a couple of broke sure drains returned when I worked at an auto parts store. May have been installer error, but..... I like the fumoto valave. Make sure you get the Spacer/Adapter if you order a fumoto. You will need it to clear because of the recessed drain area in the pan.

I will look for the Fumoto valve. I also asked Fram's tech line about the filter & he told me that if I use the 2002 filter on my 2003 truck & something happens it voids my warranty with them. He said the flow rate between the two is the same, even though one is taller. So I don't know what the difference is.

Thanks,

Scot

If you do a search on here for fumoto there are various links to that topic of posts gone by. Try this one.

I listes a site that has the fumoto valve at a really good price and I got the adapter and snap ring to keep it closed. All for a really good price and it arrived within 3 days.

I really like it. Makes changing oil a snap and I can put a hose on the end of mine so I can control where the oil goes. No messy hands here. Oh and to change the oil filter you just put a zip lock bag over it when you take it down and the oil runs into the bag and not on your hand. :smash:

Good luck :fume:

I just installed the Fumoto on my Duramax during the first oil change. After the mess that was made using the OEM plug I will enjoy the next change. Ten quarts of oil with two feet of head really makes it come out fast! I also went for the model that has the nipple so I can quickly put a hose on and drain it cleanly into a catch container. The stiffness of the valve release makes me believe it won't accidently be opened.

Took delivery of my '03 1500HD in March and had the same experience with the first oil change. I did install the SD4 Sure Drain and it's been working great - 3 oil changes later (I put on about 3000 per month.)

Even though I like the Sure Drain, I would take a hard look at the Fumoto. I didn't know about it when I bought the Fram unit. I saw it at a heavy duty truck shop and it looks like it will last much longer.

Either way though, a valve is the way to go to avoid the mess.

This all sounds real good and I'm considering a Fumoto for our 5.3 and the 6.0 but how far down does this valve hang? Does it look susceptible to getting beat up down there?

On the trucks it doesn't hang down but goes straight back. Not to far. It really doesn't look like much can catch on it. I bought the extra snap ring that holds the valve closed just in case. It set me back a whole dollar I think. :D As for something coming up and hitting it to break it off, well you would have to be doing some heavy off roading. I don't see a problem with it. It is a ball valve and from what I have read it will hold up for a long time.

I tried the Sure Drain on my 02 2500HD 6.0L CC, and it wouldn't fit right because of the Y-pipe for the headers. I could have rigged up a different tube, but the Fumoto looks like it is much better.
