Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and the GM community (I was a Ford guy...). Anyway, I LOVE my 2014 Sierra 1500 SLT and wanted to get some incite on a GPS topic. Has anyone used the IO6 radio upgrade from Infotainment.com (link below)? I want to use the InteliLink system with navigation without the monthly (outrageous) cost of $34.99 per month to use it with OnStar. I guess some would call this a hack with a one time fee to get the GPS without having to pay monthly. This "hack" will essentially pay for itself in a little over 2 years... The upgrade is from a 3rd party for the cost of $999.00 vs the OnStar cost of $419.88 per year.

Has anyone used this hack/upgrade? I do not want to pay the high cost of OnStar when this is a viable option. Any thoughts on if it will void the rest of my warranty? Please let me know your thoughts! If you have upgraded, does it work the same as the factory system?

Here is a link to the system for my truck: https://www.infotainment.com/products/2014-2015-gmc-sierra-1500-2500-3500-intellilink-io6-gps-navigation-radio-upgrade?variant=6993649601

Thank you in advance!

I think GM will just sell you the OEM Navigation module for $500 if your truck came with the large screen.

EDIT: I guess it's $995 from GM. If you have the larger screen (I assume you do on SLT), then you can just buy the Navigation upgrade from GM and don't have to go third party and risk problems with your warranty.

OnStar does not give you navigation. It only gives you turn-by-turn instructions in the DIC (unless something has changed recently). Two totally different things. One requires OnStar subscription, one comes from the factory.

Onstar Nav and Onboard nav are different but are not mutually exclusive. If you have onboard nav and add an Onstar nav only subscription for about $12 a month, onboard nav does work better. Still not as good as Android Auto though.

So I just need to call up GM and ask for this? Do you know if this is turn by turn or actual navigation? Yes my truck is an SLT with large touch screen. Thanks for the reply!

So don't tear me apart too bad as I'm just curious... but 95% of people have a smartphone now. So, why not just use the Android or Apple navigation that is always up to date and free on your smartphone instead of paying $500 to $1000 extra? Even if you don't use Android auto or Apple car play.

I couldn't justify paying that much for something that is guaranteed to be outdated with in 6 months from now, then have to keep going to the dealer for updates which may or may not be available when you need them.

I have nav and still use Apple Maps (which are not even as good as Google Maps) over it all the time. I don't know why most would use the nav system let alone pay more for it.

Your dealer should be able to hook you up. I'd call around and compare pricing. Some online places offer the same thing as well. All OEM components. I think it needs to be associated with your VIN. It's actual factory Navigation. Just like the $500 option on the other trucks.

Because a smartphone isn't as clean looking as factory navigation. And the screen isn't as big. And many places are outlawing using your phone while driving, so you have to mount your phone someplace to use it. Kind of tacky looking.

Does Android Auto or Apple Car Play display nav maps on the truck dash screen? That would be a good compromise.

If you have factory navigation you can download destinations from the free OnStar app. The maps on there are more up to date than the fixed maps on the nav system. So that's kind of a way to bypass the out of date maps on your factory nav.

not stealing the thread and im to new to even know what im talking about but i thought if you had the 8 inch with intellilink you could connect your android phone to it for navigation

my understanding besides all the good and bad info i have seen

1. the turn by turn on star sucks no map and a monthly fee

2. the normal nav with maps and stuff is a different animal that has a module installed from the factory or after by the owner with a reprogram of the truck to be able to use the module

sadly i don't even know what i have and wont know until next wed

As long as you have your phone synced to Bluetooth for your truck, the audio still comes through the speakers. I just set my phone in the customer and only look at it when needed.

Or if you go the Android auto route, it does display nav on the in dash screen. Works great. Downside is it's not wireless you have to plug your phone into one of the USB ports, like the one inside the center console.

I'd probably do that over spending $1000 for an upgrade, but to each their own.
