Cavity wax

Recommended Posts

Anyone sprayed cavity wax inside their doors, fenders, and rocker panels to try to keep panels from rusting thru from the inside? My 2008 Silverado had rust holes in the driver side rocker panel at 8 yrs and 96k miles. I decided to be proactive with my 2016 and try to prevent that from happening again. I bought 6 cans of this cavity wax and I plan to pull the fender liners out and the steps off, remove the plugs from the rockers, and flush everything out with water to get the salt out. Then, I'll blow the rockers out and let them dry for a couple days before spraying the wax in.

Over the weekend, I pulled the fender liners out, sprayed off the liners and flushed out the fenders and bedsides. I blew them out with a long tube on an air gun and sprayed the wax in around the wheel wells.

I noticed this about the liners: water soaks thru them, but at the same time, they dry pretty quickly so they don't hold moisture behind them since they breathe. The liners were much dirtier than the fender wells.

GM decided to use sound deadening where the fender and firewall meet. The problem is, they used jute insulation like what's under auto carpet which holds water like a sponge. I pulled the bottom out and cut about 6" off so at least the water can drain out. I contemplated pulling it out completely.
