Bose subwoofer replacement option

Recommended Posts

A few months ago I posted about the sub box I built to replace the factory Bose subwoofer on my 2016 Silverado LTZ. A number of people expressed interest in purchasing a box but at the time I wasn't ready/able to make any more. I have some time now and have made a few more boxes and will make additional ones if people are interested. Here are the specifics:

Should fit 2014-2017 Silverado/Sierras that have front bucket seats and the Bose sound system (will say Bose on your door speakers). The stock bose system has a 6" subwoofer in a small ported plastic "box" which sits on the floor under the center console. My box is designed specifically for the JL audio 8W3v3-4 subwoofer which sells for $200. My box replaces the stock box and fits perfectly in the very limited space available under the center console. Once installation is complete you can't tell that it is not stock (until you turn the stereo on!). In addition to retaining full stock appearance, you also don't need to give up any cargo space as you do with the kicker setup that mounts under the rear seat. The improvement in sound using this setup is dramatic. You're not going to shake the windows with an 8" sub but this adds serious kick to the system and makes it sound like a premium system should!

These boxes are hand made by me using 9-ply baltic birch plywood. Joints are tight and all seams are covered with silicone caulk on the inside. I also will include mounting hardware to secure it to floor of your truck and step by step instructions to guide you through the setup. 8 ft of 14 gauge speaker wire is included, enough to reach the back wall of the cab where you will most likely choose to mount a separate amp to power the new sub. It may be possible to power the new sub from the existing sub line but I haven't tried that and don't necessarily recommend it.

I will sell them for $130 including shipping. I have a couple ready to go now, otherwise it may take a week or so to get more made. PM me if interested or with any questions!!

I may be interested, but it'll be a while. I can't justify putting any more $ into my truck for a while after dropping a bunch to put in 16-17 LED headlamps and led fogs in.

Nice work! Couple of questions on the build.

What is the calculated cubic ft volume of the box?

I have always been told to make my boxes out of MDF. This seems like really good plywood though per the pics but just curious if this poses any issues going forward 6 months or year of the plies splitting apart? Type of wood may have been just one of those stupid thing someone says when we were younger and don't know the answer so just vetting it out.

Thanks.

Baltic birch is perfectly acceptable for a box of this type and size. It's probably a little better than mdf because it would be less susceptible to moisture being mounted in a vehicle. Mdf is probably cheaper and easier to work with.

Do you mind posting a link to the Ebay item?? I searched but couldn't find anything. there was a guy who copied my original design (I'm perfectly fine with that) and then offered them for sale on the original post I made a while ago (questionable ethics). I'm guessing it's maybe him?

Sorry, I thought he meant a 2010!!! No, no way you will fit a 10" in the center console!

I think 9-ply 1/2" birch plywood is superior to mdf in pretty much every way but would be happy to make some out of mdf if that is what you prefer!
