For what it's worth I love my 2013 GMC Sierra EC 6.5' truck and I actually use mine to haul stuff...like a person that owns a truck should, in the bed. It has all kinds of marks in the paint and the other night was parked outside in a hella hail storm and I'm sure it got peened pretty well but I haven't really bothered to look. As a matter of fact there is still dirt all over the interior (OMG! gasps the peanut gallery) from 2 weeks ago after a dirt bike outing! I'm going again tomorrow and it's been snowing/raining like crazy all week so guess what? Oh teh noooooo!

I understand that kids, a soccer ball and an overweight dog could be defined as "stuff" but I don't think that really requires a truck as that's still mamma van territory. As a PSA I'll throw this out there: Pickup trucks may I repeat may vibrate if that rattles a persons delicate framework, might I suggest either a different vehicle entirely or a donut pillow. And last but not least pickup trucks do cost money. If a person is trying to impress people with a pickup truck or how much they saved (come on now, really? you just spent $___________.00), then they really need to find some different (IRL, not the Facebook type) friends. lol.

I use my truck as a truck but not to the extent you do.

Have a neighbor with an expensive truck that has the fancy cloth bed liner and hard bed cover. Hardly ever puts anything in the bed. Uses a trailer to haul stuff. That was his plan from day one.

By those standards I guess I should never clean or mend my clothing, repair my boots or clean and oil my gun. I have no need for a napkin, a towel, soap, water, thread or needle. Don’t need a lawn mower or a paint brush. They’re all just tools to use, abuse and throw away.

Some people act like they have something to prove. When I worked at the dealership someone there said I must not be working hard since my hands were clean. Ever since I started tinkering I've almost always wore gloves because I don't want to be one of those old dudes with trashed hands. When I had trucks they got worked and because I'm not a careless slob, the truck stayed clean. Pretty simple right?

I worked 30 years on utility ROWs and usually had 1 or 2 men working with me for painting street crossings and weed-eating chain saw work as I operated the clearing machine. My trucks were fully loaded 3/4 or one ton duallys on site trucks. One of first things I trained new guys on was keeping my trucks clean inside and tools cleaned and ready. At the end of the week we washed the truck for the ride home. I doubt anyone's trucks saw more off-road then mine. No reason a work truck can't be kept clean inside and reasonably clean outside. It's called pride, same with my clearing equipment.

20+ years of cutting concrete.

The company truck, the tools and equipment were always in mint and clean condition.

Sometimes I even changed clothes before getting into the truck after an ugly job.

Two very simple reasons:

1. First impression. The truck and I are the first thing the customer will see when I arrive on the job site.

2. Clean and well maintained tools make the job easier and put the butter on my bread.

Edit: Actually 3 reasons.

3. I was raised that way.

Now I'm up the ladder and I have the hardest time of my life to get my workers to understand that they make their living with the tools they work with.

Feels like a lost cause, sometimes.

Yes, there can be a bad vehicle once in a while. It happens.

But when I can't use the truck the way it's designed for, that's another story.

One example. Rear park assist. My truck is getting dirty because I take him to job sites. But I can't pressure-wash the dirt off.

And a tip for ya as well, unless you have nothing at all better to do, don't bother to mend your clothes or darn yer socks when brand spankin new is so inexpensive. Penny wise pound foolish don't ya know.
