Oil Filter Brand

Recommended Posts

I know it varies alot by people but what do you guys think about ACDelco Oil Filters? I bought one for my next oil change instead of the usual STP I get. What brands do you guys run? What about Oil? I have a 2003 6.0L by the way

AC Delco and nothing but. Never had an issue. As for oil, whatever works for you price wise, that you feel comfortable using. No need to run a synthetic blend or full synthetic of that vintage. Mobil, Pennzoil, NAPA, Valvoline. The list goes on.

I use Wix because I could get them easy enough...use their XP version or the Napa Platinum equivalent (also a Wix).

On this topic, is the OE part number filter listed in the owners manual any different from the AC Delco equivalent listed right next to it?

Agree with everyone else....AC Delco. As far as oil, whatever the owners manual calls for on an older vehicle. I can get Dexos 1 certified full synthetic(Mobil based from Sypersyn) for about $10 a gallon through my place of employment. Of course I have to buy a 16 gallon keg. But I'll be changing oil every 5,000 miles( 6 week intervals for me) Thats what I'll be running in my 2016 2500HD 6.0L.

I've recently switched from Bosch to the basic Purolator after 40+ years of being fussy. I also switched from Red Line and/or Mobil 1 to Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

Reason? A dozen cars with a quarter million miles on them with perfect drivelines and I mean perfect. These high end products do their jobs and do it very well. Thing is it cause two pretty serious issues for me. Either I have a perfect driveline in a car that is so rotted out there is nothing left to bolt the driveline too OR the whole car is still very nice and everybody and there brother believes it is of no more value than the specimens KBB bases there values on. Which are cars 100,000 past there timing belt service and shot brakes, tires, etc. Average 250,000 salt beaters. So...I get stuck with it as they believe I should give it to them.

Oh well. I'll drive them another quarter million and scrap it. Keeps the truck off the road in foul weather.

I haven't used a Delco filter in decades. Nothing really against them, just it was easier to get Wix primarily. I will alternate between Wix, Fram Ultra, and M1 depending on pricing. And i have never used a oil that is on the dexos1 approved list. Not that it isn't a good spec, but I can get a top quality oil from my commercial lube supplier at a better value. It claims to meet the spec, just isn't on the "approved" list. I trust 'em. They have been making lube products longer than anyone else in N. America..... since 1839, and they developed the lubes for the Apache Attack Helicopter and the Abrams M1 Tank and were listed a couple of years ago as one of the top 500 most technologically advanced companies in America. I think their stuff they recommend for my GM will work just fine.

I have rarely used AC Delco over the years. mostly avoid them because I nearly lost the engine in my restored 1966 GTO when an AC Delco filter leaked most of the oil from the engine. It was not improper installation but a defective gasket.

Every OEM claims their filters are the best but yet they contract them out to the lowest bidder. I have seen a lot of AC Delco that are made in Mexico. Wix is a very good brand but I use AMSOIL EA filters (whenever possible) which are based on Donaldson synthetic media technology.

I run royal purple filter and oil but that being said i only put 5k on my truck a year and its mostly hauling so the cost of that one oil change a year really dosent bother me if i drove it more i would prob do wix filter and mobil 1 full synthetic

PF48 is the AC Delco part # for the GM part number so yes the OE and the ACD match. PF48 = 89017524 in the 2012 manual for example. Of course, that 89017524 number has been superseded a few times since then now, and the PF48 is now the PF48E. If you looked at an AC Delco PF48E out of the box, it will have both the PF48E ACD part # and then the GM part # 19303975.

It's not considered a premium filter, therefore I wouldn't go over 5000 miles with it. Otherwise, a GREAT filter.

interesting. did not know this. thanks for the useful info. do u have a personal preference for "premium" filters?

If I change the oil at 5000 miles I'll use the Delco or NAPA Gold. If I want to go off of the change oil reminder, which usually gets me to around 8000 miles, I'll use the Napa Platinum.
