Hello, brand new to messaging on forums so apologies for any errors up front. I have a 2015 silverado LT with DL8 mirrors and would like to upgrade to tow mirrors. I read through some of the forum but wasn't sure if I can order after market mirrors from you as well as the harness? I want to upgrade to power folding so I need to know if I purchase that module from you as well? I downloaded Tapatalk but I can't seem to find how to pm? Thank you.

Hello all,

Newbie here.  Thanks Mr. Gamboa for all your time and effort to help us out.  I just picked up a used 15 GMC Sierra 2500HD Double Cab, 6.6 D-Max.  It has the standard DL8 mirrors and I pull a 5er, so I am looking to put tow mirrors on it.  I am wondering if anyone has come across what I have.  The truck Window sticker says 2015, but it was built in June 2014, so I would say it is a 2014.5,  The passengers mirror does not have the temp sensor sticking out of it.  I did locate it in the standard gasser spot behind the grill.  Good news is I can put the old school style mirrors on for a lot cheaper, but my concern is the temp sensor location.  I live in Wisconsin and run a grill cover in the cold months.  Wouldn’t this cause bad ambient readings?  The temp engine temp stays where it should though.  I guess what I am wondering is did the factory mess up?

Thanks,

Ryan

Ryan, if your current passenger doesn’t have a temp sensor probe, you shouldn’t have to worry about getting a mirror with one. On some older model trucks, GM didn’t place the sensor on the mirror and had located elsewhere. It was until later model where they started putting them on the mirror.

If you end up getting a lesser expensive mirror and it turns out you need the temp sensor, I have sensor and wiring to add it if needed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I wanted to double check my exact situation before ordering.

I currently have DL8 mirrors. White cap regular mirrors on an '18 LT Z71. No mirror memory or power fold.

I am planning on buying these with a 20% off code https://accessories.chevrolet.com/product/2018/Chevrolet/Silverado 1500/extended-view-tow-mirrors-in-black-23372182?categoryId=12002

Here's where I would like some verification... If I buy these, and get Phil's harness, I will have all of the functions of the DPN tow mirror (ie. turn signals and other lamps)? Thanks in advance!

If these are the mirrors you want (23372182 - Black Cap DPN), PM me as I can get these for $495 shipped anywhere in the lower 48.  But yes, with my harnesses, this will be plug and play.  They are Manual Fold mirrors.  So keep that in mind.  20% off $625 will put them at $500 if you get them from GM.

Hey @pgamboa I am thrilled by your responsiveness in this thread. I have been tossing the idea of upgrading to towing mirrors again after a failed first attempt (I wish there would've been a disclaimer, I drove around for probably two weeks before I noticed my front turn signals were not operating properly with the towing mirrors installed.) :lol:... I am interested in either purchasing a DIY harness upgrade kit or a total harness setup from you. Here's my situation, 16 GMC 1500 SLT(all terrain pkg) with DL3 mirrors. I would like to upgrade to the DQS mirrors so as to not lose functionality of any of the buttons in my truck's mirror switch. If I were to purchase the DIY harness kit from you, will I have to pull out the BCM and repin those connectors as well or is this just adding wires to the door harness? I don't mind the thought of adding wires to my door harness/connectors but I'm a little iffy on pulling out one of the truck's control modules out and messing with the wires going directly into that...

Thanks for your time!

Can you elaborate on "front turn signals not operating properly"?  If you have an SLT and didn't swap the door harnesses, and just plugged the mirrors in...that's tells me something.  Tells me that that mirrors you installed are aftermarket, and have their running light/turn signals tied to the same circuit.  This is a common practice among many after mirrors.

So now that somewhat understand your path, in that you want go from DL3 to DQS mirrors, I can help :)

With your set,  you should already have:  Power Fold, Power Adjust, Heat, Driver Side Dimming, Mirror memory, turn signal in the glass, puddle lamp (shines downward).

GM DQS Tow Mirrors have:  Power Fold, Power Adjust, Heat, Mirror Memory, Turn Signal in the Glass, Amber running light, white LED cargo light (some call this reverse/spot/flood).

If this is the path to your upgrade desire, then I can build you harness for it.  I can also supply you (by way of my GM parts Supplier) the mirrors as well.

Here is the pricing breakdown:

$1058 - GM DQS Tow Mirrors.  Caps can be textured black or chrome.  Same price.  This is shipped anywhere in the US.

$285 - Door Harnesses.  This is for the pair, also shipped anywhere in the US.  This is build/shipped by me.  I also refund $100 back IF you send me your factory harnesses.

There should be any need for BCM work needed.  I am not sure what all you have done for your existing mirrors. I also don't know if you're looking to replace the tow mirror you already purchased.  If there was ANY wiring done in the door harness, inside the cab, etc., that would be have to be reverted back.

My DIY Kit is $65 shipped.  This kit allows you to make the modification to both door harness to re-pin them to work for the tow mirrors.

Let me know if you need any more info/help on this.

Thanks,

Phil

Hey, Sorry I didn’t give you better information first hand. I bought a set of aftermarket “DEDC” mirrors on amazon, they were supposed to have power mirror adjust, turn signal in glass, heated glass, running light, and the little reverse/clearance lights on the back side of them. As far as I know, they weren’t equipped with power fold/extend or puddle lights. Possibly part of my issue?

Anyways, I did not touch my factory DL3 door harnesses, I thought the towing mirrors that I ordered would be a plug and play upgrade. So I went ahead and made the extra hole in my door for the fourth stud (*doh*), and installed the mirrors. they plugged right in and I went ahead and hooked everything back up, put the door panels back on, go to test my install and the only thing I notice that works is the power adjust on the glass. No lights.

Anytime I used the turn signal (left or right), both front turn signals flashed. Not in sequence or anything, the front of the truck looked like I had my four way flashers on. The rear turn signals still functioned properly though.

I just put the dl3 mirrors back in and have been driving around pulling my camper with clip on mirrors ... and after much thought I’ve decided I just can’t do it anymore I really would like the extendable towing mirrors!!!

Bottom line, I can live without power fold even if it means having a useless button, but I would like to have the towing mirrors, doesn’t have to be OEM though. Not really interested in having $1200 sank into a set of mirrors if you know what I mean. Are there any reputable aftermarket suppliers that you would recommend?

Thanks again Phil!

The detailed information certainly helps. Based on the symptoms, this is a classic case mirror where they did indeed tied the running light and turn signals together. This is why the front lights exhibited the behavior. By tying these two circuits together, what is happening is that voltage was being backfed and introduced into the running light/park light circuit and Vice versa. Park lights come on, turn signals in the glass would come. Or some similar symptom.

The cargo light wouldn’t have worked since you didn’t swap out the door harnesses. The running light on the mirror was tied to your old puddle lamp (white downward shining light on your DL3 Mirror). So that amber light on your tow mirror would have come on at night, only when unlocking your truck.

When I started this thread 3 years ago, I kept a running list of “mirrors to stay away from”. If I recall, DEDC was one of them. The list got WAY to long that I stopped gathering data and now only offer suggestions to what works. :)

GM Factory Mirrors, 1A Auto/AM Auto, Syppo.

The aftermarket space for tow mirrors is so flooded right now that it’s hard to tell who’s what. Many of them sourcing the mirrors from the same China vendor (or wherever they are coming from) as the symptoms are always the same.

If you want to retain your SLT features, a good aftermarket alternative are mirrors from 1A Auto or AM Auto. They range from $450 - $650 depending on cap options, and if you need diesel exhaust brake support.

Here is a set to look at.

https://www.am-autoparts.com/products/side-view-mirrors/AM-2558332961.html

The harness build for these mirrors are $310. I refund $100 if you send me your factory harnesses.

Hope this helps. It’ll be all Plug and Play.

Thanks bud, I will consider my options here. Definitely get back with you on something. Like I said, while I don’t wanna spend $1200 on a set of towing mirrors, I think I could possibly swallow that pill of $7-800 as long as it retained full functionality that my DL3 mirrors have, which I could probably resell anyways. You don’t by chance know the going rate for a set of gently used DL3s do ya? Hahah

Thanks again Phil, it really speaks volumes about your personal character that you take so much of your time to help complete strangers out when it comes to this matter.

My please sir. I know how frustrating and confusing this upgrade can be and I’m glad I can continue helping members here where I can.

Used DL3s can range based on condition. I sell like new take offs (2017-2018 with less than 7500 miles) for about $375-$400 for the pair shipped. On average, I think ~$300 is fair. This can help absorb the cost of the upgrade.
