Windshield Wiper Blades

Recommended Posts

I think a lot of complaints about the wipers are actually due to a contaminated windshield. I've found an excellent product for deep cleaning the glass (cleans the rubber on the wipers too). It's Bon Ami cleanser. You'd think it would scratch the glass but it doesn't. GM actually used to recommend it.

Wet down the glass and sprinkle the Bon Ami pretty heavily and then scrub with a cloth. You'll feel the cleanser digging in. When you rinse it off you can see how the glass is sheeting off the water. If it doesn't sheet off it means you need to scrub some more. Then take the same cloth and scrub the rubber of the wipers. It's almost a miracle how well this works. The windshield and wipers are clean like new and work nice and smooth.

Here is a picture of what to buy. Get the 1886 formula. I found mine at a mom & pop hardware store. Definitely don't use any other kind of abrasive cleanser - only Bon Ami.

too many to quote - but x 6 or 7 or 8 or whatever on rain-x. i've used it on headlights , side view mirrors and everything - really helps shed water and in not so nice months slush snow and crap off , coupled with my OEM blades i have zero issues. apply it twice a year once in spring once in fall. best 6.99 you can spend IMO. i will note my truck also sits in my garage when not in use so its not subject to elements deteriorating them as mentioned earlier too.

Before you buy anything, always look at amazon. It saves me a lot of money every year.

Advance Auto isn't too bad if you order online and pickup in store. If you Google it you can usually find a coupon for 30% off when you order online.

Check out the Goodyear Hybrid blades at Costco for $7.99 each. I've installed them on my sons' and daughters' vehicles recently and they fit and work well (obviously better than stock). For you Costco Special Owners, this is a particularly good fit.

Two times a year Costco offers a buy one get one free on these blades....time to stockpile....Goodyear instructions and numerous Mickey Mouse mounting adapters can be confusing and look like they'll fly off with the first swipe.......BUT they hold firmly and wipe better than the OEM....great blades.

I got my 2018 a month ago and have gone just under 1000 miles now at least half in the rain.   The original wipers left streaks and shuttered so I did research and decided to get the Michelin Stealth wipers for their snow and ice performance in addition to rain.  Living in Michigan we get a little of everything.   I drove for the first time with the new blades today and they are so much better, no streaks, no shuttering, stupid quiet, and I think they look nicer too.  The original blades were sticky feeling and almost looked like a half circle after taking them off.  For 30 bucks this was one of the best mods yet.  Hopefully they hold up and do as well with snow and ice as with rain.

Here's one out of the box for ya.  Take a clean old bed linen sheet (white is preferable) and makes a small rag.  Spray some lacquer thinner onto the sheet rag.  Run the lightly soaked cloth along the square edge of the wiper blade.  You'll see a coating of black (rubber) removed from the blade onto the rag.  This works best if you remove the wiper blade and work under a nice bright shop light or outside in the sun.   Lacquer thinner evaporates very quickly so work fast.  Do not scrub.  Run the whole length of the blade nor more than twice.  Wear a nitrile glove or something.  Giggle if you will but I'm still running my 2015 OEM's on my 2500HD in Maine with all the salt, sand, and other road crap.  Want to see the results of your work?  Take a very strong lens (old camcorder or camera) and look at the wiper cleaning edge before and after.  It makes a nice crisp edge.  It typically is very small chunks of pitch (pine trees in Maine) the collect on the cleaning edges of the rubber that make the streaks.  The rubber needs to be in good condition for this to work.  If it's cracked, separated, folded over, etc. you need new blades.  All the best...

GM must use different wiper blade suppliers. I have never found a blade that would last as long as the original ones on my 2015 Silverado, built at Flint. I hate the adapters and find them inferior to direct fit blades. I have used Bosh Icons and they were average life. I am now using Trico direct fit, they work good an are quiet.  I wonder how long these will last?

I don't know if it's the area I live in (St Louis MO) or just my luck, but I have never had a wiper issue with my 2016 Sierra. I use rain-x 2-in-1 wiper fluid and rain-x quantum blades. I wash my truck regularly and replace my blades annually. Maybe that's why I haven't had an issue, but even after a full year of use through 4 seasons I don't have much streaking or chatter from the blades. I just replace annually because I'm super picky when it comes to visibility. Windshield gets replaced a soon as it's cracked or gets a large chip, non-working headlights are replaced asap, and the windshield is always clean. Brakes and tires are another area I don't let get to a certain point.

I still have the original blades on my 2017 Silverado,  no streaks, or chatters, go figure?

Same here, before my recent service last month - I had them changed, just because, even though I really didn't need it.

Hard to beat the OEM's, also hard to pull out the VISA when they tell you how much🤔😬, but worth the expense.

Yeah, it ain't cheap but, it's cheap insurance, so to speak. :)

Yes sir, think that is what I pay here in Washington, but put on myself.

The passenger side entertains the neighbors, as I use some "colorful" language to get the old one off. Wife's Tahoe much easier on both front ones.

Found a You Tube video on the rear for the Tahoe, some fellow in the worst Christmas sweater ever changed his in 57 seconds, showed all of the tricks, now it is a breeze to swap out.
