Bose Subwoofer replacement!

Recommended Posts

OP here. Nice looking build L1nk3d! I too am curious about your LC2i. I just used the line level into the Alpine Amp and I think it sounds really good.... but, now I'm curious!!

I would be willing to make some more boxes but am a bit hesitant because as L1nk3d said, it's a very snug fit. I would hate to send one to someone and then it turns out to be 1/4" too long for them! L1nk3d, did you fasten yours to the truck or just relying on the snug fit to keep it in place?

Someone asked about rattles and shakes... I don't notice anything unless I turn it up fairly dramatically or if I have some loose change or an empty soda can in the center console area. I wouldn't be concerned about it!

I imagine the line level inputs are fine. Like I said I didn't have the pigtail so I just went that route. It does complicate the 'tuning' but I think your going to get a cleaner signal in the long run. The level matching and bass roll off compensation is what sold me. I still need to tune mine a little more because the bass knob is very sensitive turning it 1 degree yields a huge increase in base, not gradual like I would expect.

I was going to weld up some brackets but I ended up just drilling a couple holes for the bolt size in the front bottom to 'align' the box, the the center console just keeps in there. Its so snug the brackets would have been overkill.

If I build another one I learned enough to make it fit better I think. But, yes, I too am concerned about sending it to someone and having it be so tight and them not being able to figure out how to get it to fit. I think the design needs a little refinement before I can produce these with confidence.

I've heard some rattling on VERY bass heavy tracks at very specific frequencies, but for normal listening to rock country pop r&b most hiphop, you won't get that. Keys, change, pens, anything loose in the console is going to rattle. My son left an empty caprisun pouch and IT rattled, but, if your putting subs in your car you should already expect that. Right?

I'm going to be addressing any panels that rattle separately, GM is known for that so it's an issue. My exhaust makes certain things rattle too so it's not a big deal for me.

Could either of you touch on how this gets wired up? Is there any issues with it integrating will the rest of the bose setup? I thought I remember reading something about a chiming issue when adding a sub to the bose system

I haven't had any issues. The LC2i or speaker level inputs get patched into the sub output from the bose amp so it should already filter out unwanted freqs. I have had the door chime on while listening to music and haven't noticed any anomalies.

There is a good YouTube video on where to patch it in. Its a Blue wire with grey stripe and Grey with Black stripe for sub out. It matches the connection at the factory sub.

Power, and ground are also easy. Power is a little hard to get through the firewall but if you take your time and follow what others have done it's the hardest part of the install.

Does the design use all (or practically all) of the available space? How much for a box?

Yes mine does, all of it. The center console is ON the box snug, If I can I'm going to make it have a few mm between the console and the box. I don't like that it's that snug.

I am interested in this box. PM me if either of you are going to make a few. Thanks.

If there is that much interested here is what I'll do.

I'll use the extra material I have to refine my fitment make sure it's reasonable, and post new pics. Basically I want the center console to fit perfectly for you, I had to work at it to get everything back together just right. Then I'll put a few out and see what everyone thinks. If there is more interest I can take more orders.

Just to be upfront with everyone I'm traveling for work on Sunday and will be gone a week, so the earliest I'll be able to get started building these would be 3/10. Maybe sooner but realistically it would be that weekend. I'll get the second version made this week if there is interested which it seems like there is.

Once I've refined the design I'd sell them for $200, seems to be the going rate for an empty custom stealth box these days. I have no idea what shipping would be because I haven't weighed the box yet and I'd need your ZIP to calculate it.

If you are interested in me building you one of these send me a PM with your ZIP.

I'll need 5 people to be serious about it though, which it seems like there is already so just PM me and we'll work the deals. We can do Square Cash, Venmo, or PayPal. 50% down to cover materials and the balance before shipping. I prefer square cash but if you're more comfortable with Paypal that's fine.

The only other stipulations would be speaker type and that I can only guarantee it to fit the 2014 Sierra 1500 Crew Cab with bucket seats and the Bose subwoofer. If you don't have that truck buy at your own risk. I imagine any 2014-2017 with bucket seats and the center console will have the space but I can't make any guarantees around that.

One additional note is that I did have to trim the bottom part of the dash, it looks like there were mounting points for plastic panels in the trucks that didn't have the center console. I couldn't tell from andreej's pictures but it looked like he did the same thing. If you look at my pics you can see the part that I trimmed just above the box. It serves no function in my truck and won't affect the structural integrity of the truck, or your ability to revert to the stock sub.

Only fits:

  • 2014 Sierra 1500 Crew Cab with bucket seats and the Bose subwoofer
  • JL Audio 8W3v3-4 8" Subwoofer

Includes

  • Custom Box, glued and screwed.
  • Gold plated speaker terminal
  • Black Rubberized coating. (carpet won't fit)

I may update the design with brackets if the fitment requires it after I rebuild it.

P.S.

andreej, if you want first dibs on the sales, just say so, I don't want to step on your toes since you did this first. I just used your idea and guessed at the measurements. I don't know how to mention users without quoting so hopefully you see this.

I'll make a separate post with the people who have asked so far because I think there were already five. First come first serve an all.

Well thank you for taking the time and effort to take pics... second.... how much for a box shipped to California...

I too would want a box made and shipped to California!

That's 2 buddy, better setup shop! :)

Pm me a price shipped for one. I might get rid of my under seat box.

It looks like these are the interested parties so far. If there are more I'm down to build more. Just see my post above and PM me to confirm interest.

I haven't pulled my console yet. But as tight as it sounds would a layer of sound deadening on the inside of the console with 3-4 layers of fiberglass be an easier fix? As I said, have yet to remove the console.

Help with what?

I would like to get some sound deadening inside the center console, but there just isn't the room with the box I have now. (maximized internal air space).

I'm not sure what the fiberglass would do, unless you were considering molding an enclosure out of that directing to the center console, which would be pretty badass but I'd be concerned about additional vibration in the center console.

I think having some air space (1/8 - 1/16 inch) and sound deadening between the box and the sub would eliminate any rattles and possibly improve sound quality.

Yes, I was thinking a molded fiberglass box with a layer or two of dampening material to help isolate it from the console. New born at home so not much free time. Maybe this weekend I'll pull the console and see what I think. I have quite a bit of experience with fiberglass boxes.

That would be cool. If you have the skills you could elliminate the side pockets on the console (which I never use anyway), and get some additional internal volume. Dress it up eith some vinyl on the side, even port the enclosure if thats your thing...

That's exactly what I was visualizing.
