Towing Speed With A Uhaul 5' x 8' Cargo Trailer

I'll be towing a Uhaul 5' x 8' Cargo Trailer from SC to FL and the trailer says 55mph max. What are peoples thoughts on going faster? Most of the drive is 70mph on the interstate and 55mph is just damn slow plus the trailer tires are like car tires so I don't think that's an issue.

 

I'm also looking at a 6' x 12' Cargo Trailer instead.

Check the tire pressures and weight capacity of the tires. If within limits then 70 should be fine but liability becomes yours

Yeah I'll have to check those of course to know and load the trailer correctly but I feel like it's to cover Uhaul.

From what I remember, there are no trailer-specific speed limits in SC, GA, or FL. The main thing to remember is that (like previously stated) most trailer tires are rated for 65mph and that 55mph limit on the fender was 45mph a few years back. I think the limit on the fender is for U-Haul's insurance reasons...if you flip it doing 56mph, they are off the hook.

I drove with the smallest trailer Uhaul has from NC to ND with no problems staying with the speed limit on the interstate. Then with the big dual axel from ND to SC. Actualy drove about 5mph over both directions.

 

Just check your insurance, check the trailer out, double check the ball connection, then drive with common sense and you will be fine. Idiots pull them everyday and make it to their destination safely somehow, so you will be fine.

I have moved with u-haul trailers in the past. Some of their equipment has a lot of wear and I drive more cautiously when pulling their equipment, especially an older model! I did have a leaf snap on a double axle once and was able to pull safely to the side with wheels rubbing on the fenders. U-haul treated me well and didn't question my speed or my load, however I believe my caution helped minimize the potential impact of this spring failure.
