Removing bumpers for powder coating?

Recommended Posts

I'm planning to have my chrome bumpers powder coated to match the black truck but I'm wondering how involved this is... looks like a lot of plastic to take off the the rear bumper alone.

Anyone able to tell me how to go about stripping them?

Subscribed. I have a painted front bumper I bought and needing to swap out. Also have a dented rear bumper... so I'm interested as well.

The rear is a PITA, have to raise the bed to get the bumper off, no way to remove the brackets with the bumper on the truck.

Two harnesses if you have rear sensors.

The plastic, be careful with squeezing the tabs to release, take your time or you'll be buying another for $160 if squeeze too much will destroy them.

Rear sensor, be careful, plastic pieces, will need paint to match you color.

Go buy a new spare tire tube ring (part 6 or 7 in picture above don't remember) while getting the bumper coated, it will be destroyed coming off.

For the front, don't let that picture above fool you the grille will need to come off to remove the bumper

most of those bumper bolts aren't reachable from underneath.

The pics aren't directions, just exploded views so you get the idea of what comes off.

No one stated they were, but looking at it appears that one (not me) would think that the front comes off without removing the grille.

Was just pointing it out to save folks the trouble of scratching their head, throwing tools and cussing.

I was able to get the rear bumper off and put it back without doing anything to the bed.

And the front grill does indeed need to come off. But the front end disassembly gets easier with practice. I had to go through it quite a few times to get it angled correctly.

I took my rear bumper off without touching the bed.

how did you manage to do that? I had to jack up the friggin bed so the back bumper would lift off and out....I would prefer not to have to do that again!

Had mine powdercoated a few months back. Paid $200 for the front and rear bumpers plus $100 for my buddy at the shop to take them off. I helped with removal but didn't do enough to give you instructions. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't fun either. Well worth it though! Looks so much better and definitely changes the whole dynamic! Go for it man!

Thanks!! Found a good video for taking the bumper off - doesn't look bad to do. Hoping someone has experience to share about taking everything off the chrome.

Have a link to share?
