Rented the new camaro, whoa

Recommended Posts

So I own a '11 mustang 5.0, and a truck with an l86. I rented a '16 camaro 1ss in florida for 5 days just to see what all the hype is about. Holy hell is that car amazing. It litterally makes my 412hp mustang feel like a boat in the corners and the motor feels like it has 150more hp.. The camaro's handling limits were just unreal.

The main reason I'm posting this here is because this particular camaro had the 8 speed auto. So it has almost the exact same drivetrain as a 6.2/8speed truck. Couple things that shocked me-

The 6.2 sounds absolutely amazing. I am still on factory exhaust on my 6.2, I could not believe the sound coming out of those pipes on cold startup and during downshifting was the same engine. I previously thought that the ford coyote motor was one of the best sounding v8's out there. The 6.2 trumped it by a mile. I'd literally stand behind it every time I remote started it. It sounded pretty much like a highly modified cammed vette that just gives you a gear head boner when you hear it.

The trans- wow that 8l90 is something else. That's the best automatic I've ever driven, including dct's. The 1-2 shift is like nothing I've ever experienced. I know that the 8 speeds are capable of keeping the engine on throttle during the shift, I didn't really know what that meant until I drove this. The 1-2 shift feels like car hit the nitrous button for a split second. I know thats just how I perceived it and really it's just eliminating the lost acceleration from a shift. I'm a die hard manual guy, but I'd consider the auto in the camaro, it's that good. It's also no wonder the automatic camaro runs much quicker times during acceleration tests.

Just wanted to give you guys with the 8l90 some encouragement as I know it's complained about a lot. If you could get that thing tuned to act like it does on the camaro, it's just incredible.

Also on a side note, the car I rented had 20k miles and was beat to hell. The steering was off center, had a ripped seat, a badly cracked rim I shouldn't have been driving on, but man the entire thing still felt like a slab of granite on wheels. No slop anywhere and 0 rattles in the interior. Build quality was off the charts for a muscle car.

Best sports car for the dollar ever made, hands down.

I rode in a 16 with the 8 speed that had a custom tranny tune. It was insane, the shifts were like blips and the sound of the exhaust during the shift at WOT was something sent from the lord himself

This is just incredible coming from a Mustang owner, they usually tear the Camaro apart from jealousy.

You sir are an honest man!!!

My mustang is a huge pile of shit in every way by comparison. I mean it is 6 years older. But the build quality, handling, everything is just a completely different class of vehicle.

Best way to describe the camaro is a german sports car with a perfectly executed big block swap.

It's just too bad it looks like poop (IMHO). Again, IMHO, they ruined the 6th gen by making it look like everything else on the road. I'm glad I got the 5th gen, way better looking and as we all know, everything is upgradeable.

I have driven a 2016 Corvette A8 / 2016 Corvette M7 / 2017 Camaro 1ss M6 / 2017 Camaro 1ss w/ 1LE package. The performance is really close on all of them, the Corvette is only .2 tenths quicker in the 1/4 mile over the Camaro. For me that not enough to justify spending the extra $20k to get the Corvette even though I would love to get another one, I had a 2008 Corvette with the Z-51 package for a couple of years and loved it.

I am placing a order for a 2017 Camaro 1ss w/ 1LE package in 4 weeks, I am like a little kid waiting for Christmas right now. Killing me to wait, more so knowing that once I place the order I will have another 8-10 weeks to wait for it to be built and delivered.

I personally love the 6th gen looks over the 5th gen, I hate the fake louvered rear wheel wells, plus I like that the 6th gen is 200-300 lbs lighter.

As far as using the shift parameters from the Camaro/Corvette 6L80E, it is possible. Not sure how much that weight and use of the vehicle factors into the shift calibration. I noticed the same things as the OP when I drove the Corvette with the A8, the shifts were instant when you were WOT. It would bark the tires on the 1>2, 2>3 and 3>4 shifts.

While I haven't driven the c7, the entire time I was driving it I was thinking "why by a corvette." Seems like they serve the exact same purpose as neither are versatile DD cars and they are both incredible sports cars. I got the impression it's like it's a 9/10ths corvette for 2/3rd the price.

I know there is supposed to be a connection to our trucks in this discussion about Camaro's and Corvettes. Some people think of the 1500's like a super-sized sports car. Some people purchase them instead of a mini van. Others, like me, buy them as a big luxury sedan! The versatility of our trucks is endless!

I had a long discussion on another forum about this, it was actually a debate about how stupid it is to buy a raptor (i was argueing it's not that stupid) but the arguement really fits into any pickup.

Over the last 20 years pickups have really evolved. In the 90's pickups were basically solely utility vehicles. Modern pickups are entirely different animal. Not only did they become more capable from a utility standpoint, but they now can do double as a replacement of the luxury family suv or sedan. They are also extremely capable as off road vehicles as well. They do a damn good job at all those tasks seperately, let alone combined. Now take that entire package, and throw in a freaking vette motor and transmission in it and it will somehow lets these landmonsters accelerate 0-60 in 5.x seconds and 20+ mpg on the highway.

<first pickup I've ever owned was my current one, and I think I will be a crew cab luxo pickup owner for a long time.

Witnessed an impromptu street race between a 16+ Camaro SS and a 15+ Mustang GT earlier today. Not even close the Camaro won by over 2 lengths in a stretch of 1/2 mile or so. They are making some serious power with the 6.2 in Camaros.
