"Engine power reduced" Fuel Pressure Too High?!? p228d

Recommended Posts

Driving home from town today, slowing for a left turn, light throttle, truck dinged and had no power. Would not go over 25 mph or so. Little to no power. All gauges ok. CEL on. Just short of 5000 miles, 2017 CC 5.3. SLT.

Took it to the dealer. Waited 2 hours. Tech plugged it in and told me the fuel pressure regulator was reading too high. He cleared the code and drove me home in my truck. He called me later and said there was a "PI" from GM about this. It needs a fuel pressure switch but probably a new pump. He said they will put a switch in and if it does it again a new pump.

Im thinking both would make me feel better about driving my new truck out of town.

I joked to him, "Well the fuel pumps used to last 150,000 miles in my old trucks. I guess 5,000 miles is the new standard."

He was silent....

Mine failed recently. Same "Engine Power Reduced". Dealer replaced the pump.

Did they just replace the pump on the first visit? Or did they replace the pressure switch first?

Pump first time. I had some intermittent jerking under acceleration that I was attributing to various things - transmission, gas, pump, traction control, etc. Of course dealer couldn't reproduce (neither could I). I left the dealer and attempted to get on the freeway when power died and I got the message. That was the first time I got a code and they replaced the pump.

Late December. Truck has been running perfect since. I had them install the GM performance intake at the same time ;). It's a great match to my GM/Borla exhaust!

What Chevy performance intake are you speaking of? Was it P/N 84016022?

Yes. I've see a few different pictures online. The one in this before and after from another user on the site is it...

Sounds pretty throaty. It does give me a little drone (helicopter sound) at certain RPMs. Only when accelerating in v4 at low speeds though. Sounds fine on the freeway.

#PIP5459: DTC P228D

A vehicle may come in with DTC P228D (Fuel Pressure Regulator Control Performance - High Pressure) set current or history.

A fault with the fuel rail pressure sensor. Do not replace the Engine’s High Pressure Pump.

Correction

If this is encountered it is recommended to replace the Fuel Rail Pressure sensor.

This PI specific for 2017.

Got the truck back today. The dealer tech said they replaced the fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail under the intake manifold. He said they had the scanner run the pressure way up to "test" the system and its working fine now..... fingers crossed
