Front diff fluid color

Recommended Posts

Did my initial front and rear diff fluid drain and fill today on my 15 Sierra 1500. Figured it's for good measure since it's at 15k miles. Rear fluid was dark but normal to me. Front was thick and gray. Magnet had a few shavings on it.

Not a new procedure to me and this color and thickness of the front was odd to me. Is this the norm on the new trucks?

Wife's 06 yukon never looked like this. Thanks

There are TSBs out there about the marking compound used during gear setup causing discolored gear lube. Short that, if it's creme colored it could be water intrusion and the resulting emulsified oil.

Are the fronts still filled with conventional 80w90 while the rear is synthetic 75w85?

I changed mine and my wifes and both were grey also. Mine has 20,000 and hers has 9,000 miles. I replaced it with a good synthetic. Cant say if its normal but everything works as it should.

Thanks guys. I filled the front and rear with 75-90 full synthetic Mobil 1. Dealer said that is what they use even though manual says different.

The fluid was factory fill and the color gray along with the thickness scared me a bit. Where it was gray then I guess it's normal.
