Steering wheel lock up

Recommended Posts

Ok, just got my 2014 Sierra back and was told that it was throwing codes saying it had a voltage drop. They said that there was a BULLETIN out for it and it recommended to replace all the ground and battery cables. The dealer said the cables were not handling the load, granted these are the factory cables that came on the truck! I just paid $525 to replace them all! My truck is not under the bumper to bumper warranty any more so I was stuck. I asked them how GM expects customers to pay for something that has obviously been a problem for alot of people, as I have found a bunch of threads with this happening to others. I have owned alot of trucks and never had issues with factory installed cables being a problem, especially a problem as dangerous as this. I was asked at by the snooty little punk when does the truck become yours and not Gm's! He tried to use a wheel bearing as an example of things that go wrong, but I told him that's a big difference from a battery cable that obviously can't handle the load that GM designed it for. The fact there is a bulletin on this shows they know it is a problem but there haven't been enough problems or deaths to take it public. So I guess they want a few people to be killed.or severly injured before they address it. Shows how they feel about customers. I have had the truck for 2 days and have not had the issue return but I am truly scared to drive this truck anymore, because it will only take it happening at the wrong time and I will be involved in a horrible accident as it only happens when turning or making a u-turn. But really GM at what point do you take responsibility for your mistakes? Battery cables should last the life of a vehicle not need to be replaced on a 2 or 3 yr. Old truck, especially one that cost $40000 brand new. I have been a GM fan for a long time, in fact my wife and I bought a 2015 Acadia a couple yrs ago, but after this I believe I will not have the same loyalty. They have lost there way and put profits before lives now and that's a damn shame! My local dealer is Dale Earnhardt GM in Tallahassee Fl. And they act like I had no right to be upset. If it was them riding with there kids in that truck and got hit I bet it would change there tune. I'm not sure what to do with this but feel like it needs to get out there to prevent some other poor family from having to experience a tragedy at the hands of some corporate shmuck who decided to keep things hush hush until they have no choice to fix the problem. The guy that told you it's your traction control is full of you know what! You better take that thing back before you get killed or hurt in that thing. Tell them what they told me and see if they will address it. Hope you get it figured out and if anybody has ideas on how to spread the word about this DEFECT please let me know. Thx.

Thanks Dayton I totally agree. My dad and I thought it was BS too but we just let it go. When I started to describe the problem to them their eyes light up and said they've never heard of it before. The reason why they said it's traction control is because the diagnostics found nothing wrong with the truck and that " its running as designed"

HAD THE SAME PROBLEM FOR THE PAST YEAR!! Chevy has been giving me the run around and now today my engine caught fire!!! This has happened to me multiple times and is always random when it happens. It's also random what will happen. Sometimes it just shuts off. Or will shutoff lock up. Or will shutoff lock up and will lock the doors. Either way who knows when it's going to happen. Chevy has a huge problem on their hands and they don't seem to want to deal with it. Good luck and be careful!

With you being taking it to Gerry Lane I assume you're in the Baton Rouge area. I took mine to all star for the same problems and they told me it was a bad battery and my amp steps. Put a new battery in it and the steering locked up and the truck died. I been eyeing new trucks since my steering started locking up around Thanksgiving. I ended up trading it in and switched brands due to the poor customer service from GM regarding this problem. Shame too because I really did love that truck. Just couldn't trust it.

PLEASE READ THIS IS IMPORTANT:

This thread did not hit home with me until I reread this entire thread this morning but I had a 2003 Ford taurus grocery getter that had a really very similar problem it would just randomly maybe once or twice a month have an episode where the entire dash would light up like a Christmas tree and engine would start missing sometimes it would actually die. Had 10,000 miles on it when i bought it used (I think we figured out why someone got rid of it LOL) and it went back to the Ford dealer about 6 times they NEVER fixed it. If this car had an electric steering system (it did not of course) I am betting it would have made it feel like the steering was locked up too. Anyway me being the inquiring mind I continued to do research on my own and one day had the alternator checked one more time before I set the thing on fire and killed it. This final test showed a BAD DIODE inside the alternator. The Bad Diode would cause a voltage spike which would then set off a chain reaction and cause the computer system to reset and exhibit the wierd and random symptoms. I put a new alternator on (after having the diode tested in the new one LOL) and we drove that car another 120,000 miles and it NEVER DID THAT AGAIN my son wrecked it last year or it would still be in use today. My wife refused to drive it for a long time but she finally accepted the fact that it was fixed. Here is the kicker the dealerships and several autoparts stores performed the battery and alternator tests over and over and all came back as being good except for one, believe it or not it was Autozone. Take your truck directly to Autozone and have them test the alternator for a bad diode before you get killed in that silly thing....................

My Silverado has not had the problem since I brought it to the dealership (in Baton Rouge). The autozone story is interesting. I'll bring it by soon. I don't think I'd ever leave chevy/GMC because I've never had any problems with them besides this and my Silverado has been pretty solid. I also don't like the new f150s anyway.

The Taurus was one of the first vehicles to use the CanBus system which is the norm today on almost all cars and trucks. The system is vulnerable to voltage spikes unless they have produced some fail safes? These vehicles are not as different as some would like to think.

The other explanation is out of this world - Aliens have set up a earth base at the area where the truck acts up, they are sending out EMT pulses cuz they need to go home "ET GO HOME"

Remember the c5 corvettes did this. The security system would lock up the steering wheel when broken in to. Some of them malfunctioned, the steering would lock up while driving...in a corvette.

Mine locked up a few times, pretty darn scary when driving down the road and steering locks up.

There is a huge amount of info on these threads so in case you missed the "OTHER thread" about the steering issue here is a great video that some lady posted that shows the violence of the steering wheel movement when the steering assist drops out........

Is that a small child that you can hear in the video in the background? GM are you listening?
