2017 Silverado ITBC

Was scrolling through a thread about the 2014-2016 silverados and adding aftermarket brake controllers, wondering if it's possible to put the stock ITBC in a 2017 Silverado 1500 2wd 5.3, mine came with the 7 prong adapter so I was told it's prewired for it by the trailer company but wondering if anyone has come across this yet. Would prefer to keep the stock look instead of adding a box underneath the dash.

Anymore, I am surprised that GM doesn't just have the ITBC installed on every pickup that leaves the line. They put so much other stuff on a pickup that is about short of worthless and unnecessary, putting the factory brake controller in would make a lot more sense than some of the other goofy stuff they put on at the factory whether you want it or not.

The actual controller piece (at least on my 07) resides on the drivers side frame rail just behind the rear tire and is more of a brake by wire system as it is tied into the stability control and anti lock braking systems as well as the manual override in the cab. You would have to add the actual control module, any sensors, and probably reprogram a computer or two that control the brakes. I think I would stick to a good aftermarket controller.

Factory controller can not be added to a 2014-2017 truck. GM does offer a plug and play aftermarket controller made by Curt p/n 19330154.

From GM on adding the factory one:

#PIT5241D: Adding Integrated Trailer Brake Controller RPO JL1 - (Sep 13, 2016)

Condition/Concern

Some customers may request the factory Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (RPO JL1) be installed on their Full-Size Pickup or SUV when the vehicle was not ordered with the option.

This is to advise you that, if the vehicle does not have the option (RPO JL1), it cannot be added to the vehicle.

Note: Reference the latest version of PI1105 - which advises how to install an aftermarket trailer brake controller.

Does it call for some ECM reprogramming as well to make it work? The harness is there, just a matter of getting the computers to recognize and incorporate into things when putting in a ITBC. Would seem that is the only hiccup to doing this by those that didn't have factory ITBC.

The dealer installed the aftermarket Curt brake controller and said the ITBC could not be added. I don't really have a problem with it, but, where they mounted it, I do. They mounted it on the lower panel to the right of the steering wheel. So my knee hits it when I get in reaching for the accelerator pedal. Where does everyone mount their aftermarket controllers?

Like other said it can't be added. I would really like GM to at least put a indent in the base of the dash so you could add on and not have the Knee hitting issue.

I added one in my 2014 but the 2016 had the built in one.

I put mine right over the E-Brake in the 2014 and pulled it when I was not using it just to avoid hitting my knee.
