230,000 Mile Service

11/29/2023

Oil Change / Tire pressures.

1,998-mile OCI actual.

3 ounces of makeup.

0.0307% oil consumption on fuel consumed at 26.23 mpg for this OCI. Identical to the hundredth of the last OCI.

5 Quarts Kirkland Signature 5W30

No filter changes. Only 2K on it.

I have two jugs of this oil from before the cleaning cycle. Oil consumption has been very steady and very low for the last 5 changes or 10K miles. Just coming off full at 2K.

This kind of boring I can live with. 😉

231,250 Mile Service

12/20/2023

1,250-mile OCI.

0.0311% oil consumption on fuel consumed at 24.86 mpg for this OCI.

E-15

5 Quarts Kirkland Signature 5W30

No filter changes. Only 3.12K on it.

Cold it clatters like a diesel on 5W30. Warm? All you hear is the high side injector pump.

232,449 Mile Service

1/11/2024

1,198.7 mile OCI.

6 ounces of makeup. About 3X the rate when on 5W40

24.89 mpg and makeup at .0973% on fuel. A quart per 6,500 miles.

Twice this run I drained the factory clean side separator. After the first installed a slightly larger orifice. Second drain was a fraction of the first. More blowby on lighter oil. Lots of moisture. Not uncommon with orifice systems.

4.75 Quarts Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 😏

1 Purolator PL15436 Filter

Three observable notes on this oil:

1.) Doesn't smell like anything I've ever put in a motor. Not objectionable but not an odor you want the Mrs. to wear. Like some of the industrial cleaner Lubrication Engineers use to sell.

2.) Color. Orange tinted amber.

3.) Pours heavy. Does that make sense? Allot of apparent body at 75F. More than Kirkland.

Targeting 2,551 miles for this run. Take her to 235K if she makes it. Valvoline says 4 'normal' oil changes to clean it up. That is a 30K commitment.

233,233 Miles Service Note:

1/26/2024

784 miles this OCI

Bought another 5 quart jug for make up. A lot cheaper than buying quarts.

Used 8 ounces over the first 375 miles.  🤔

233,575 Mile Service Note:

1/30/2024

1,125 miles this OCI. Added 8 additional ounces makeup oil.

375 miles for the first 8 ounces then 750 miles to the next 8 ounces. That is unusual. But still not a pattern.

Drained a few milliliters of water from intake box 'trap'. A hint of snot on the dipstick but nothing in the breather/PCV line/valve. It's been a few degrees either side of freezing with a dew point just blew. Very humid for the temperature.

The oil visually looks very good. Unique aroma. 😏

Found this in my Delo testing. Not sure what it is but it’s a lot. if you did a clean reference sample of the Valvoline Clean and Restore you might find something like this.

233,950 Mile Service Note:

2/2/2024

Another 8 ounces in 375 miles. 24 ounces in 1500 miles....so far. A thousand left to go.

All Interstate miles done yesterday at 60 mph in light winds.

234,325 Mile Service Note:

2/4/2024

1,875 miles on this OCI.

Regular as clockwork. Another 8 ounces and another 375 miles.

A few things worth noting.

1.) The oil is much cleaner color wise than is usual by this number of miles.

2.) No black smoke (soot) when you stand on it after a few hundred miles of not doing so.

3.) Three eight ounce pours from this bottle, and I have 12 ounces left. I expect my mason jar is not accurate. Pretty sure they didn't get four extras in a quart bottle.

4.) This whole OCI has been different. Doesn't seem to matter my speed as much and the usage save for the second has been stunningly linear.

Late Edit: Wasn't the Mason jar. The bottle is not even a good rough guide. 😬

235,000 Mile Services

2/9/2024

2,550-mile OCI

Consumption was a quart in 2,143 miles on .3096% of fuel consumed.

Valvoline R&P 5W30 at 5:1 with HPL SAE30 EC. 5-quarts charged, 1 held for makeup oil.

1 Purolator PL15436 Filter

Fill washer bottle, check tire pressures. Drain air box reservoir. All water, no oil. It functions as a clean side catch can.

As good as the oil still looked on the stick, the filter was about a dark as I've ever seen. A very dark brown, almost black. No sludge. No 'cake'.  Little if any 'visible' varnish but plenty of carbon.  Oh, and stink. In a clear bottle it was plenty black. Just not inky.

I let it drain near an hour. On startup you have no trouble telling when the top end finally gets a good supply of lubricant. It takes a while. Cam variator hunts.  Always has. Nothing new.

Warm February. :)

237,000 Mile Service

381,415 Km

2/27/2024

2,000 miles / 3,200 km on this OCI.

New air filter. NAPA Gold. Stripped a screw in the plastic housing. Repair coming.

Just a bit over 1/2 a quart so far. It is an improvement.

Late Note: Unplugging the MAF to change filters set off codes for both it and the Barometer sensor. P0113 & P2228 This is normal. Reset after start up.

238,930 Mile Service

3/11/2024

1,430-mile OCI

24 oz of makeup. .377% on fuel exceeding GM's guideline.

If I had let this play out another 29.5 ounces would have been consumed. Or a quart in 1,495 miles.

As I ended it here total miles/quarts = 1,907 miles a quart. 2K The GM limit

She's toast.

Mixed 5 quarts Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 FS at 5:1 with a quart of Biosynthetic 5W30. (Depletes this stock)

Charged 5 quarts to the motor.

1 Purolator PL15436 (Red Box)

Again, no magic chemistry going on here. Burning off odds and ends. The Mobil was $12 a 5-quart jug cheaper.

If the bores are polished and have lost their texture the heavier oil won't help. Let's have a look.

They get good mileage when not dragging rings around. 😬

1,070 mile OCI

26 ounces of makeup. More than the 5W30

.534% of fuel. Not missing or smoking and very quiet.

Tossed a pint of Red Line S-1 in the fuel tank. Last tank, tanked.

5 Quarts Valvoline R&P 5W30

Second use of filter.

241,000 Mile Service

4/5/2024

1,000 OCI

13 ounces of makeup oil. Half of last OCI. Best of the last five changes.

.2754% of fuel.

1/2 bottle of Red Line S1 in the fuel. Now a habit.

5-Quarts of Valvoline Restore & Protect 5W30

1 Purolator L15436 filter.

Filter inspection. Base of pleats now holding what looks like a fair amount of ground black pepper. Filter is the color of an unbleached coffee filter. Has lost that shellac yellow color.

So, particles larger than about 30 microns. Good to know my filter works. 😬

Have now run 7,500 total miles with the Restore and Protect or one standard oil change. 3 more to go. Yippie! :(

"Base of pleats now holding what looks like a fair amount of ground black pepper."

Residue from cleaning?
