185,000 Mile Service

Scrape and paint the underside. Rust-Oleum oil based rust inhibitor white. Likely a loosing battle with the way it is constructed but.... This will take me a day or two. Want it done before cold weather (salt) season.

what's a CVC orifice?

Crankcase Ventilation Orifice. Now .050" This motor was not equipped with a PCV valve. They used an orifice. I just moved it's location to a place that didn't cost $500 a pop to clear it when it plugs. 😉

Other interesting stuff:

9/20/2022

250 miles. 7.083 gallons of fuel 'metered'. 35.3 mpg. New high for this unit.

On pace to use a quart in 4 to 5 K miles.

what would happen if you installed a pcv in where the orifice is?

I've tried that. In fact the PCV is still installed but acts only as a check valve now. The valve cover has a shield but not a baffle so it over draws. I could stop that with a disengagement can and may someday. Room is limited. There is also a 'tunable' PCV available that isn't out of play.

I have a few customers that use AMSOIL's Heavy-Duty Metal Protector for an undercoat.

192,500 Mile Oil Service

12/10/2022

192,496 actual miles.

2496.9-mile OCI (2,500 nominal)

Used about a half quart. Very steady rate this time.

Supertech HM 5W30 out.

Quaker State Syn 5W30 in. Wally World was totally OUT of Supertech 5W30. Out of most 5W30 but the high dollar choices. QS was the cheapest on the shelf today.

No filter change. Only 2,500 on the one in it and it holds next to zero oil being cast into the block.

Bought two cases of COSTCO 5W30 for next four changes.

I’ve heard nothing but bad with Fram. I guess ultra guard is OK? Silly me I’m sure you’d check them out? Yea, probably.

It' a great media. FRAM on the left, WIX/NAPA on the right. The bypass is part of the GM cap and there is no can or gasket to worry about. Glass media.

193,543 Mile Services

12/31/2022

Replaced battery dead non-serviceable OEM TPMS sensors with lifetime Autel modular units that can be serviced if required. About ten bucks a piece cheaper than OEM.

1*Autel MX-Sensor 315MHz Rubber TPMS Tire Pressure Sensor Programmable ...

Retired the Continental Cross Contact LX20 Eco Plus tires (Left) with a set of Continental Cross Contact LX25's (Right) Tread pattern change. Same size.  103,543 miles to 4/32" on this set! A bit better than the Michelin Latitude Tour they replaced. (90K) Noisy as could be the last 20K. Chalk that up to -0.9* of negative camber that is built into an un-adjustable suspension beating the edges off. One of GM's better ideas...NOT. A rear camber kit has become available and will be installed soon then some grinding and fitting to fit up the front. Likely about March.

Replaced fog bulb on drivers' side.

Scuff it and initial test:

Quiet! Wisper quiet. A few decibels lower than new LX20. Comfortable. Slightly heavier input v output with good feedback. Balanced up perfect with near zero runout or wiggle. Amazing. Straight line stability is off the hook. I'm happy.

Total shop bill for everything? $1,300. 😬

1/24/2023

195,000 Actual

2503 OCI

22.67 ounces of makeup

Quart in 3,533 miles.

0.175% of fuel consumed. (I'll call her dead at 0.25%)

COSTCO Kirkland Signature 5W30; 4.5 Quarts

TRIAX S-7; 0.5 Quarts (working off old stock)

FRAM XG9018 filter

CHEVRON Techron 1 bottle to a full tank 18 gallons

This usage is measured on the outage plus make up oil. Took a new jug of COSTCO and metered out 4 ounces at a time scribing a line each time for a quart. Keep it for future reference.

Fuel of 98.025 gallons over 2433 miles netted 24.82 MPG

26 ounces of makeup

Quart in 3,076 miles.

COSTCO Kirkland Signature 5W30; 4.5 Quarts

TRIAX S-7; 0.5 Quarts (working off old stock)

FRAM TG9018 filter (looser filter. Last two fine filters have buckled on the coldest days)

I'm back to blending 20% ethanol.

Buckled oil filter media. Sorry for that but does it unseal the filter in the aluminum plastic covered permanent case?   Might be normal for this design because I had similar issues with 2009 Chevy Malibu 2.4L no matter what cartridge brand I used. The OEM product was Hengst made for GM and was too efficient in my testing.  Fram XG and now called Ultra worked best in our analysis.
