New High Pressure Fuel Pump and high side fuel pipe replaced this evening. Lifter and fuel lobe both had some scoring. No surprise there, eh? What is odd is that did not show up in the UOA. 😬 Mechanic says this sort of scoring is common in these motors and of no concern at this point. He's done dozens of cam/cam chains in these things. 

 

Will change oil/filter in the AM with some cheap flush oil. Drive it a few hundred miles and change it again then test after about 1500 more miles and see where we are. :dunno:

 

 

If I had to use put on my fully retired ( and diminished memory) the scoring didn't t show up in Synthetic Advantage ISO Certified Testing because it happened a LONG TIME AGO and the asperities are now protected by your excellent corrections to the fuels dilution and crankcase venting mods.   In other words the problems of third party ( crankcase gunks and fuels)   lubrication interruption that caused the scoring are corrected and the oil additives can now cover those asperities to reduce the pressures and stick slip taking place.

Okay then, around 178,000 I'll pull a sample for a UOA panel and see what the what what is with this pig. 🤣

 

I chose this oil for viscosity and availability. It's what Wally World had on the shelf. 

I want some cushion if she disappoints me....again. 😬 

It doesn't stop running when the lab or mail takes a few extra days. Even though the labs say it would likely be fine on 20W I'd like SEE the data before taking chances.

Narrow Road!

 

Sugar Bear took the day off but Dizzy and I did not and this one road was a chunk of the trip home. @35 miles. I love these rural county roads. This one is a surface called "Chat". Not really asphalt, but close enough. Very fine stone in an oil base compacted by traffic. Dust free, once settled, and quite durable. In this county this is E300 Livingston County and changes names as it crosses each county. Yea a 55 mph single lane road that runs both ways. Love Illinois Roads. 

 

Dizzy is seems just loves E-20 fuel and a beautiful day running along at 55 mph. Upper 70's (F). 50% humidity and a 5 mph tail wind every time we turned had her purring like a kitten with a bowl of warm milk and delivering lower 30 mpg mileage in spite of frequent stops for a look, a walk, some ice cream, farm stand stores, a forest preserve and a graveyard break plus lunch and breakfast. 

 

This road bypasses every town of size between US 24 and LaSalle County 5 and is as straight and and flat as it looks in a photo. You don't find these on Google Maps but in the paper county by county map books and real time by phone.

Chip an seal is a much more economical method of paving than laying down pre-mixed asphalt allowing local governments to actually pave more gravel roads or maintain existing asphalt roads rather than using an asphalt overlay. The big disadvantage is that invariably you'll meet up with some cretin going the opposite direction lickety split in excess of the speed limit (generally 35 mph on fresh chip an seal) spraying you with rocks and chipping your paint and cracking your windshield. Ask me how I know.

In my next of the woods growing up in New Jersey it was tar with gravel overlay. They would just let the excess gravel work to the side. Messy, nasty and chip everything.

Up to the Galena Territory today in Jo Davies County. Most northwest county of the state and most scenic IMHO. Just short of 1,000 feet in elevation is Terrapin Ridge. 7 percent grades followed by 7% decent like bobbing in the ocean. Pretty area. This will work a motor silly 😉

Pulling grades are the norm around here. A round trip of 14 miles to our small town has 9 grades to pull, the longest about 2 miles. Yes, it works a motor and transmission. Sorry, had to chime in.

No apology required. I remember. Lived in Aurora & Cherry Creek Colorado for a couple of years.  I always enjoy reading your comments. Maybe I should have said 'uses more fuel working like that'. Won't hurt it :) Grade braking at times had it spinning 4K rpm. That sounds funny in this motor. 

 

The graveyard crawl was horrid however. About a half hour crawling around a really large bluff side grave yard looking for a cousins grave. 2 mph in 80 F weather had the cooling systems maxed out. Need to get that fan switch checked out. Never heard them turn on even at over 220F on water and 200 on the transmission. No oil cooler on this rig so I guestimate the oil was close to 250 F. Normal temps for this machine are 182 F water and under 160 F transmission. No air flow....no cooling. 

 

I find it hard to photograph places like this. Put a frame around it and it disappears.

1,043 miles this OCI and the oil at dipstick film thickness is clear enough I need direct sun light to find the level. Now that's different. Yep still full too. :) Still thick and slick and yet undocumented. Soon.... I need PROOF. 😉 Just don't trust my sniffer anymore...

Added the Engine Oil Temperature X-Gauge to the Linear Logic Scan Gauge 2 system to accompany the Transmission, Ambient Air and Air Box Inlet Temperatures. For a late model OEM this motor uses a very low coolant thermostat. 180 F.

 

I'd like to see what "normal' looks like according to GM.

Acid Test

Wife took it to Moline today and sent me this about 90 minutes into the nearly all Interstate trip.

 

In a shakedown run last night in 85F weather the temps were higher. Trans around 170 F and oil 199 F at 62 mph but today the air was cooler, lower 70's and it was raining....allot. This is very close to how the modified Pepper runs.

 

So much for 5W40 pushing it to overheating the oil. At this speed it spins just a bit over 2K rpm. 62 mph is dead on 2K. I gave it a few miles at 70 last night in the heat and a headwind and I backed out just as quick. Up to this point the temps took 25 miles to become stable rising a degree every ten minutes or so. They were rising 2 degrees a minute at 70 and did not recover until the next off ramp where it recovered really fast. Trans ran right up to 180 F quickly. Can we say TIPPING POINT for the cooling? Water marched right past 192 and kept going until I took my foot off it. This is a 180 F factory stat. 

 

On the other end of the scale running 50 mph has the thermostat cycling, the trans running under 155 F even in heat and the oil about a dead 190 F (5W40). 55 has everything running on the bottom and cool as a cucumber salad. 

 

What I believed intuitively was true. This motor in this truck is not a Central Texas mid summer combination.
