6.2 engine oil

Recommended Posts

I generally run Schaeffer oil, the same brand I get for my commercial bulk stuff. Good value and a great oil. I do use some Amsoil in some niche applications. I really like a healthy dose of moly for anti friction and a boat load of Calcium for acid protection and detergency. There are several other brands I would choose, just that doing it this way I can get my oil and such on commercial account at commercial pricing and it is a good value. I really don't have a favorite I would swear by. I have used Kendall, Pennzoil, Mobil, etc over the years and never really had a stinker in the bunch.

I was a Schaeffers user until just recently, it's a good oil and/or lubricant. I put lots of miles on their 9000 series with good UOAs everytime, I also use their #274 grease (never replaced a ball joint or ujoint once I started using #274), and their gear oil works good. I also run their hydraulic oil in my log splitter with good results. Pretty much everything of Schaeffers I used I had good luck with.

I only quit using Schaeffers because I can get Mobil 1 on sale for $20 per 5 quart jug...hard to justify the cost.

Guess it would depend not the individual, but if I had a 6.2 I would probably run 5w20 over 0w20. Only difference is the cold flow rate, with 5w20 fitting within classification requirements down to -30C, which is lower than many folks deal with even in the harshest winter. At operating temperature, they are identical viscosity. A 5w20 is more shear stable than a 0w20 and also has a lower NOACK (burn off vaporization rate) which can be of great benefit to AFM lifter components. Yes, even the Amsoil 5w20 has a lower NOACK than their 0w20. There are many 5w20 oils that are on the dexos approved list so there should be little concern over warranty. And there is no appreciable way the dealer or the OEM could even test to see if it was 5w20 or 0w20 by sending in a used oil sample.

Just some food for thought.

Whatever dexos approved full synthetic is on sale. And a good premium filter if you are going to run 5000+ mile oil changes. Seriously- the amount of $$$ people throw away on fancy named oils like Royal Purple and Amsoil is sickening. There is no need. Quacker State full synthetic, or Mobil-1 full synthetic, or that Pennzoil full synthetic- it really doesn't matter!! It will do the job just fine! Be smart and save that $$$ you would pay for a silly named "premium" oil for something else.

No worse than all the money they throw out to do things to their pickup that have no appreciable purpose but to make them feel good and make a social statement. The boutique oils seem pretty cheap in comparison.

Not that I'm going to, but if I want to get in on that action I paid less than $30 for my 15k miles oil change...Mobile 1 at $20/5 qt jug and a Wix Filter.

I've already ran it to 15k in my other cars with suitable UOAs, I doubt the truck would be any different.
