Using an SD card for iTunes music

I can't get my truck to read the SD card with songs on it, is there a trick? I plug it in and press "USB" but it says no devices connected.

 

The USB key/thumbdrive works fine, but i'd rather use the SD card slot.

 

 

If it matters, I dont have the center console, but the fold up middle seat, with the SD reader below the climate controls.
