Are these inherently "quiet exhasut type" trucks or is it just

2016 5.3 double cab. Ive been toying with the exhasut since ive got the truck to get the sound i want, originally installed a 3" diamond eye single pipe single rear side exit with diamond eye muffler, was too quiet so i removed their muffler, still wasnt happy with the sound so i um... "altered" the third kitten. I got a decent ammount of sound from the truck but the tone wasn't there. This week I installed a Flowmaster super 10 single and while the tone is somewhat better it still doesn't bark like I want it to.

 

I'm not sure if its just me sitting in the cab with all the sound deadening or if I'm not quite 100% on my setup. I'm looking for an aggressive Camaro type growl. Next step will probably be headers or a custom dual side exit setup.

I think it's just the sound deadening. I installed a Borla Sport direct replacement muffler on my truck and I've always thought it's super quiet in the cab (my CAI is obnoxiously loud though) but according to people who drive behind me they say it's pretty throaty and mean sounding

The design of the manifolds and cats seem to muffle the sound a lot on these. I'm running a Flowmaster Outlaw extreme muffler with a dump right behind the muffler and while it it one of the loudest L83s I've heard, it's no where near as loud as my old '99 5.3L with just a 40 series on it.

 

To get them really loud you need to put long tube headers on them.

I did a Borla S-type cat-back on my truck and I thought it was quiet in the cab as well (still, it was louder than the stock). But when I actually remote started my truck and stood outside I could tell it was a world of difference!

this is exactly what i want to do... did you keep the flapper qwank?.. or just cut it all out, put the muffler and dump?... any helicopter sound without the flapper?

 

i was thinking of doing a cherry bomb... had it on my old v8 ford, and man it would pop and crackle.... it was loud!..

I removed the whole exhaust after the 3rd cat and bought a pipe for a 2013 extended cab from advance auto and welded the extreme muffler to it. The muffler came with the hangers and dump on it already, I just has to cut each piece in the perfect spot to make everything work.

 

I get the helicopter noise but it really doesn't bother me at all. I thought about adding a flapper to the system to see how it works, but I'm afraid it will quiet it down too much in all conditions.

under stood.. thanks for the reply... i'm thinking of cutting the muffler and everything behind it... putting in a cherry bomb.. 2 1/2 in, 3' out.., and then adding the flapper back, then dump before the back axle... still debating...

Your "altered" third cat improved your noise with your 10? I did the 10 SI/SO with 3" pipe out the back and it's not loud, at least not nearly loud enough for my taste.

Yes, it was a noticeable difference, Not like headers or a straight pipe but you are considerably freeing the exhaust flow and changing the pressure around that area. If you didn't care about warranty on the exhaust I would cut the whole 3rd cat section out and weld in a new pipe to smooth out the flow and eddies caused by the now void 6"x 8" "chamber" in the exhaust. I left mine because if I have to bolt the stock exhaust back up no one will be the wiser.

Thanks. I gonna have to look into this more. I need more volume out of my 10's.
