2017 Silverado clunking noise!!

Recommended Posts

Lets get that camera mounted so we can see the movement in your rear axle. Hopefully not as bad as this Caltracs video of before they added the bracing.

If you have that much movement then get the caltracs brace or an equivalent system ordered right away LOL

Dam!! That's crazy!!!

Just took my truck (2016 Sierra SLT Crew) into the dealer for a 5,000 mile service.

Since new I have experienced moderate/severe clunking in the 1-2 upshift and 2-1 downshift. Being a long-time reader here of people's experiences, I decided to let it hit the magic 5,000 mile number before going in to address the issues. At about 4,800 miles, things really calmed down and I would only notice the shift clunking every once in awhile. Saturday when I took it in for service (at around 5,100 miles) and mentioned the trouble I'd been having, the dealer said there was a software update for this very issue, and that they'd re-flash it and then do the fast learn. WOW! Now it drives like I expected from day 1. Beautiful! If your dealer hasn't run this latest update for you yet, get them to do it! I couldn't be happier!

I did also tighten the leaf spring bolts a few months ago, which did make some difference, but definitely the transmission was part of the clunking as well. I too agree that sometimes I hear the fuel sloshing around in the tank (which I've never heard on any other vehicle), but it's not the same sound as these transmission/rear-end clunk noises.

Is it possible to share the TSB# or any other information that can be used to take to the dealership to have this done?

Hi everybody. Happy new year!

I just bought brand new 2017 Silverado 1500 Reg Cab long box! Had only 2 miles on it.  I drove 20 miles and started feeling a bump/clunk every time I stop. Brand new truck has already issues. Took it to the dealership, they could find any issues with it. They came up with statement that this issue is maybe due to fuel movement in a tank. Sounds like "BS" They printed out a letter from GM stating that it  is a normal characteristics for GMC Sierra  and Chevy silverado 2007-2018 model. MORE than 10 years GM cant figure out this issue!!!????  They dont tell you about it when you purchase a car. They dont disclose this info to customers.  My truck is still in dealership. They say that when you filled up gas tank the noise  and bump is gone. I drove many other brands and none of them, no matter how much gas I had in a tank, had this issue. I am going to pick it up on Monday but I highly doubt that it is due to fuel level issue.  I feel that bump even if drive less than a mile.

I will really appreciate if anybody recommend me what should I do in case dealership denies to do further repairs or buy their car back.  As a customer I feel screwed because they didnt disclose this issue that GM has for 10+ years. Ones you buy a new car you cant return it (unless it is a Lemon Case).

Thank you

Just to clarify it is trans issue it down shifts into 1st too soon and causes a bang. Make you check your rear view mirror to see if you have been rear ended.

@SEAN Handyman I have the same truck as you with the same issue (Clunk when coming to a slow stop / AKA 3-1 downshift clunk).

@wildlyfe200

Did either of you guys ever get it fixed? I'd love to know!!

Thanks!

I have a 2018 Chevy Silverado 2wd so when I go forward or backwards I get a clunking noise I have already had it service once and Chevy dealer said they loosen the   Bolts and put grease in between the leaf springs and tighten everything back up it works but it’s at it again the truck only has 9700 miles on it I had a 2010 Chevy and never had this problem and it had 113000 on it I am getting tired of this 2018 truck

Same issue with my ‘18. My dealer seems to think it’s the rear axles so mine is in the shop as we speak getting them replaced. I’ll hopefully have it back tomorrow or Wednesday.

Do a complete trans fluid flush with with new Mobil 1 fluid they are using for the "clunk" fix in the 8 speeds. It's the new blue label Mobil 1 Synthetis LV ATF HP. It will take 12qts. My "flares/clunks/hard downshifts" have pretty much disappeared.

Also, do the thermostat delete.
