2017 Silverado clunking noise!!

Recommended Posts

Just took my truck (2016 Sierra SLT Crew) into the dealer for a 5,000 mile service.

Since new I have experienced moderate/severe clunking in the 1-2 upshift and 2-1 downshift. Being a long-time reader here of people's experiences, I decided to let it hit the magic 5,000 mile number before going in to address the issues. At about 4,800 miles, things really calmed down and I would only notice the shift clunking every once in awhile. Saturday when I took it in for service (at around 5,100 miles) and mentioned the trouble I'd been having, the dealer said there was a software update for this very issue, and that they'd re-flash it and then do the fast learn. WOW! Now it drives like I expected from day 1. Beautiful! If your dealer hasn't run this latest update for you yet, get them to do it! I couldn't be happier!

I did also tighten the leaf spring bolts a few months ago, which did make some difference, but definitely the transmission was part of the clunking as well. I too agree that sometimes I hear the fuel sloshing around in the tank (which I've never heard on any other vehicle), but it's not the same sound as these transmission/rear-end clunk noises.

Anyway of us knowing if our dealership indeed has the latest update? Did they mention a date of update release or any form of identification so we can ask for your specific update.

  • 1 month later...

Just bought a 2016 hd2500 4x4 with 14 miles!

around 200 miles Iv noticed a clunk noise from the cab back when the truck flexes on a slope or even just backing up on a small incline

and even if you swing the steering wheel back and forth around 23/30 mph!

I know its not the spare tire! nor the hitch! It almost sounds like a broken motor mount/body or shock! sound!

My local dealership said it was because I put 18" rims on it and it came with 17" rims! in which i did! stock rims off of the same year truck but a Denali 3500, because my truck came with the ugly steel rims and Firestone tires! the Denali had aluminium rims with Michelin tires' far better!

the dealer stated they were not compatible and the noise was going from the rear passenger side! well if that's true? wouldn't all the tires make the noise!!!!!

Well knowing a little bit about things! I'm thinking there full of sh#t! and contacted the neighboring county Chevy dealer' and stated what my local dealer said! there response was that my local dealership has no clue what they are talking about and they will gladly take a deeper look!

Any one else have cure?

.02 - sounds more like a snap than a clunk when the drive train is decelerating........might be one of the pawls in the Eaton locker either disengaging or just loose and moving with the change in inertia.

Do you have the 8 speed or 6 speed? Do you have a TSB?

My 16 has been riddled with issues

On my 3rd exhaust replacement

Engine tick that they hear and cant figure out

Harsh down shifts.

All the random clunks

still shakes on the highway.

7mpg fuel drop

I was thinking about a buy back but then I would have to drive another gm truck. It will be a crap shoot if I get another crappy truck

Update!!

My vehicle has been at the dealer since 1-9-17 and still hasn't been fixed. I brought it in so they can fix the scratches on it from the factory and since then they said they have to repaint a piece cuz the scratch wouldn't come off. So they have been painting that for 2+ weeks. They haven't even had a chance to look into the trans at the moment cuz it's been at the body shop. This is ridiculous I am paying for a Silverado and driving a loaner equinox. Also contacted GM customer serivice off this site and of course thy don't respond or follow up on anything. Anyone have a Email or any contact info to someone hire up in GM that can get this process moving? What else can go wrong!!

Call this #, tell whomever answers the phone that you want to be set up with a "senior advisor" to start a case #.

Definitely speak with a "senior advisor" and definitely set up a case #. Even though this might be minor problems right now, you will have all this on record if things go bad later on. Also you're senior advisor will contact the dealer, light a fire under them, and follow through with your case until complete. ( At least that's what's supposed to happen, but these gm people suck too to be honest)

But you can start here and work your way up the chain from here.

Is your truck the 6 speed or 8 speed transmission?
