Active grille shutters

Recommended Posts

These are it. I took them off to put a light bar behind the grill. My check engine light is on. What im planning to do is remove the harness from the shutturs and the small electric engine and reconnect it and hide it somewhere. Ill then celar the check engine light, really hope it works. I went small on the bar but they are super bright. KC Flex lights.

There are nubs that go into the motor that will need to be cut off of one of the shutters which will also make you have to cut the center part out of the frame. This will tease the shutter motor into thinking it's working correctly. If you just remove the motor from the housing and plug it back in you will continue to get CEL.

I made my own bracket to fit 3 small LED light bars in the grill without removing or modifying the shudders. I did have to grind down some of the rear aluminum housing of the LED’s that was for heatsink. Mounted it using the 2 bolts in the middle of the grill that hold the shudders. Shown here while test fitting with tape. I purchased a LED controller on Amazon & linked it to the Chevy Homelink within the cab.  Painted it flat black, they look & work great.

Code U1510 came up on my 2017 Silverado. It’s been at the dealership for nearly 4 weeks now :/. After “close examination” they have concluded that it is my shutters and my warranty is covering it. However, could this shutter issue be the reason my “main negative battery cable” went out as well as my battery now drained? 1st my truck went in with a check engine light and had that cable changed, after that it went back for the same code. It’s now been there 3 weeks and they’re saying it’s the shutters. How could these go out so soon? I’m in New Mexico and it’s hot and dusty as hell here. I just want my baby back ? Im hoping this is the end to that check engine light because I seriously don’t want to drive my 350k mile Camry anymore! Why does Chevy have these “codes” that don’t go to anything specific? Need help ASAP.

I bought a Grille Guard Barrier from American Trucks because their site said it would fit. It doesn't! No refunds! Scammed again! Can air shutters be removed? If so, how much will this effect the performance of 2017 GMC Sierra 1500?

Welcome to the site.

Yes you can remove, and yes like posted above you will get a CEL.

You will not loose any engine performance if they are not there:

  • Shutters open in instances when cooling airflow to the engine is needed, like when towing, climbing a steep grade, or in other situations that powertrain temperatures rise above certain threshold conditions.
  • Shutters close on the highway when engine cooling needs are reduced, thereby reducing aerodynamic drag and maximizing aerodynamic efficiency by pushing more air around the vehicle.
  • GM says that the onboard computer system that controls the active air shutters is programmed to keep them closed as often as possible to reduce aerodynamic drag.

I cannot imagine this feature actually making a mpg difference but they sure talk a good game about it.

Move up north where -30 is the norm during the winter.  The crappy winter gas lowers mpg enough, these shutters do actually help.

Back in the squarebody days, a piece of cardboard in front of the rad worked too.
