spark knock or preignition

Recommended Posts

I recently read a post on another board on possible spark knock or preignition and wonder if you all can help me. I recently (at 45K miles) changed my spark plugs to champion copper plus and almost immediately I noticed a consistent ticking sound (best heard when you are at a stop and the windows open or if you're outside the truck listeining to it idle). Could this be spark knock? Could it be the result of something I did with the spark plug install? It's not as noticeable when moving, but the noise coudl be drowned out.

Please advise me and let me know if a new set of plugs can fix it or what I need to do. The truck purred like a kitten even at idle before I installed the new plugs. I want to get it back that way.

Please feel free to respond by PM if you like.

Thanks! Oh yeah, 00 Yukon 2wd 5.3L with 51K miles now.

First, Spark knock only occurs under load so that cant be it.

Second, did the plugs you install have a longer threaded area or a longer center electrode? if so it could be contacting the piston.

Third, part of the spark plug may have came apart in the cylinder

Fourth, I would not install Champion plugs in my worst enemy's truck (from past experience) they are worthless in GM vehicles

I would get a set of Delco plugs and install and see what happens :D
