need help on muffler choice

Recommended Posts

well i have a 2016 chevy 1500 it has the 5.3 all stock, not really planning on tuning. or turning off V4 mode at this time.

looking for a muffler only swap that offers some sound on start up and revs but quiet idle (not like stock sound) and cursing or very little to stock interior

i have been thinking about

spin tech 6000? cant find much info for the newer trucks

black widow 250 venom from what the manufacture said the 250 is what everyone goes with.

borla S type. but cant find a muffler only setup. https://www.borla.com/products/muffler:_675_rd__x_2400_lon_part__19131347.htmli got from another thread. but this is the S type muffler thats in the cat backs right?

i would love this setup. but i think thats cat back only? also should i go duels or single? i am going with a turn down over the axle. (not directly over the axle but kinda like a straight out back but turn down mid way. or 45*)

i know there is the muffler database thread here but i still couldnt find my answers, thank yall this stock truck sound is starting to get to me.

figured i would update my thread, but after reading about 20 or so pages in the database i am still very lost and would love to bang my head against a wall... choices shouldnt be this tough to make but when you don't want to spend money twice for the same product it gets tough.

i had a magnaflow 18" clone on my 11 ram hemi ccsb. and it had a slight drone to it but according to a family member it droned my grandma loves a quiet interior. but since this new truck has the flapper valve. (i heard by many of members that it helps drone, others say no) i am thinking it may be quieter? i have a feeling that the 22" magnaflow would be a little to quiet even after its broke in even if i delete most of the exhaust its self?

i am tempted to cut the muffler off and go straight pipe and keep the rez and valve in place but i am still not sure if i would like that. i did that on my ram well long story short buy more sawzall blades before cutting exhaust so i had a 90% exhaust leak and drone was a killer. and seemed gutless.

emailed/ FB messaged borla yesterday morning and got nothing back...

Cut the resonator and valve off. Put a dynomax bullet the 16.5" one and call it a day. They run 50 bucks or so and sound much better then straight pipes.

Here is what I have.

thank you i have thought about that or close to that muffler but i don't know if i will like the sound, i thought deleting the valve would make it drone more? thats the one thing that was talked about, but i do plan on getting that resonator cut off. i left it on when i had that magnaflow clone and it was a tad quiet but had a good tone. but would a real magnaflow 18 sound pretty good or better then that clone? i don't mind spending money with in reason like sub $400 out the door cost buts its going to be a one time only charge

also thinking about flowmaster looking at the super 44 i love the sound of it as well. but i am wondering just how loud it would really be. dad had a flowmaster 3 chamber on his 02 avalanche and it was a tame sound with little cab drone but also i have afm, etc on this truck.

also this is off topic but that clone labor and all ran me about $150 i believe. red flags should have gone off in my head but never lit up....

Edit showed the video (didnt get to interior) to my grandma (who also is person that says yes or no.) she thought it sounded good. Another off topic found out how to edit my post in the mobile view..

Sounds pretty good, what all do you have done to it exhaust wise? And would it sound any different on a 5.3?

And any drone in the cab assuming afm is present?

On another note missed a good deal yesterday found a flowmaster super 44 for $76 with free shipping from JCW vs 106 shipped from summit racing

I think I'm in the same boat as you. I'm new here looking for an exhaust. Most likely doing just a muffler swap as I don't want to spend too much. Really liked the Borla sound but can't find exactly just a muffler to buy. Might end up with a Flowmaster or Magnaflow. Please update this thread if you found a good setup as I don't want drone/inside cabin noise either!

Will do, from what a couple of shops told me its about $350 instilled With a flowmaster

I will probably go with the super 44 since i love the sound and i have been watching a couple of you tube clips of it vs the super 40, if i can sneak away from a family reunion this weekend doubt it. i will probably get it done then.

Also talked with spintech they said there 3000 is quiter then a flowmaster 40 (i think thats false as it sounded louder or close to same)

I saw the video you posted and how he also had another of the super 40s. I did like the super 44 sound better but if I go with Flowmaster, I will probably do the 40s. It still sounded good and I believe he said it's still quiet inside the cabin. I definitely need that as I will be driving my kid and baby around...

Have you looked at the super 50? They are supposed to be quiter then the 40 series.

https://www.quicktimeperformance.com/Screamer/This is a good option i thought about but at $350 (cheaper from summit racing but they keep pushing the ship date out) (since August) and not much for sound clips, so i passed on it.

I would love to get an in cab sound of the super 44 when it kicks in to eco mode, with the flapper in place but so far no luck on YouTube.
