My 1998 K2500 suburban with the 7.4L 454 is showing its age and I am interested in the feasibility and availability of changing out the engine with a motor that is capable of running on half its cylinders to increase its fuel efficiency but maintain its towing capacity. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

I second the idea of not messing with AFM and trying to get it to work in and older body style. However, I would try to source a 2006-2013 wrecked 4x4 2500 truck and do an entire drivetrain swap. The 6.0 engine will keep you where you want to be with power, the transmission and transfer case are matched to the engine, and the rear end is matched to the gearing in the tranny. All the computers are there with the wreck and you can modify the harness to work with your older dashboard and gauges.

It won't be a weekend job.
